One consideration is your housing in 5 months. Are you going to buy a house then or still be renting? If you are renting, a lot of places either don't want dogs so it can be harder to find a place or if they do accept dogs they will charge a pricey dog deposit which is what happened to us when we did our last rental search. About 2/3 of the places don't want to mess with dogs, and then the remaining 1/3 wanted $500 or more pet deposit. So you probably should consider that.
Also if you do get a puppy, I would try to get a puppy that either is housebroken or almost housebroken. We got our last puppy at a shelter and it was about 10 months old and almost housebroken so it took only about 2 weeks, but at least we didn't have months of housebreaking at least. You can also go to www.petfinder.com and find puppies or dogs that are completely housebroken which is even better!

Puppies require a lot of attention. I think you should wait until at least June when you move. Since it's an apartment you are living in, your neighbors could report you if the dog starts howling when you aren't there. I love dogs and understand why a dog would help your loneliness. Do you have the time and patience to train a dog with your studies? I suggest for right now you try to meet people your age and socialize more to keep you from being lonely.

They make those rules because there are some stupid college students that adopt animals and then dump them when the year is over. Sad I know, I'm a college student myself. I lived in a town with a state school and when summer hit the number of stray animals suddenly jumped from not very many to an overwhelming number. I suggest waiting to get your pup and do research in the mean-time. That way you don't have to worry about accidents or anything like that and you can really get a breed that you love.

you should wait until you leave this apartment, that will give you time to think about what kind of dog you want. a puppy is very needy anyway, are you planning to be home a lot during the first couple of months? If not you probably should get an older dog.

Wait till June and find an apartment that allows pets. I'm sure you'll love your dog but dogs love stability, which you can not provide at this time. If you are truly a dog lover, then the happiness of the pet trumps your desire to have companionship.

I hear you, I've had dogs all my life too and i'm also moving away to college, but if i were you, I'd wait 5 months before getting a dog. That way, you wouldn't have to worry about someone catching you and getting you (and your dog) evicted. So maybe you should wait 5 months to get a place that allows pets...you and your new dog would be happier.

do yourself a favorite and hold off getting a dog, someone young like you will not have time for a puppy dog(because you be too busy out with friends, parties, school, etc),, go volunteer at your local doggie daycare and/or spca... Because if you decide to find a job, who will watch and spend time with your dog??? And it is not easy to keep a dog quiet, with out having him/her bark, or whine when you are you not there, and where and when do you plan to walk it and let it go to the bathroom(other people living nr you will notice and report you)???

Finish School first, get your life set up with a steady place to live and a good job first.
You will have the dog for 14-20 years, be sure you want one this long and will devote time for him, otherwise it is not fair to him.
