There's this guy and we've been best friends since kindergarten. I've liked him since about 3rd grade, but I've just been too afraid to tell him. Since we're in middle school, I really want to ask him out but I'm afraid to. I just don't want the fact that I like him to mess up our friendship because he's a great friend.

What's wrong with asking a friend out? I mean, if you did go out with him but the relationship wasn't so good as you think it would be, wouldn't there be a slight chance that you guys are still going to be friends? Gosh, those are some long times to be crushing a guy, especially for a friend. But if you really would like it to work out, you should just ask to go to a movies like as a friend and maybe he'll let it out and tell you if he does feel more than just a friend to you. Or try to do something that will show that he has feelings for you more than just a friend. Good luck. I don't think there's any risks or any harm done here.

A trick that not enough people use is this:

Ask HIM whether you should ask him out.

Worst likely case is he says "No", and is very relieved that he got to say that without a big problem. (Because if he's a good friend, he had to have a hint this was coming.)

Then you can say "If you ever change your mind, please say something" or "Will you be mad if I ask you once in a while to see if you changed your mind?", whichever you think is less risky.

Very tricky indeed. Better to check out how he feels about you through a mutual friend.
