the grill choice is based on personal preference. I currently own both, even though it is a little more work to use the charcoal grill it leaves a great smoky flavor on the food. DO NOT use too much lighting fluid otherwise your food will taste like it. If you can get a lighting tower. For the chicken wings, whether you are doing BBQ or Buffalo let them marinade for just a few hours 4 tops; otherwise the acid content in both condiments will start to denature the proteins in the chicken giving you a tough meat and not much flavor. For the burgers place on the grill, for about 3-4 min on each side, you may add cheese after one side is done. Watch the heat as it may vary from spot to spot. For the sausages it depends on the sausage and your preference, if it is a brat you want to cook for about 5 min per side, for regular hot dogs 2-3 min should do the trick. If you want to get really technical get a thermometer and make sure that all the meat has reached at least 160°F in the inside.
Good luck on your BBQ

Warm the grill. Gas dries the meat more than charcoal. Do charcoal and add some soaked hickory chips (soak for 2-3 hours in water). Pay attention to your flame so that you don't overcook in the center and the outside food is not cooked as well. Rotate meats and watch the temperature. Close off the outlet from where the charcoal flows out to a slow smoke, which regulates the temperature. Be sure to season the meats, except hot dogs, and it will absorb the smoked flavoring provided by the hickory chips. Hickory is a medium smoke. You may also add some liquid smoke to the charcoal, once warmed. The flavor is unimaginable.
Good luck and enjoy. Hope you have good weather.

ok, since a barbeque is a way of life in Australia, perhaps you should look to a couple of sites I will list
aww recipe search - AWW is a magazine called Australian Womens Weekly, which has a great recipe search, you will find many recipies there, another is
Sunrise on Yahoo, it is a television show - early morning of course, and the stars are having a barbeque competition at the moment, you will find many recipies there
About the best advice I can give you is do not put your food onto a charcoal grill whilst the coals are still burning, wait till they are white, and make sure you spray the grill with a oil spray before they are hot so the meat or whatever do not stick
good cooking
cheers from Oz

It sounds like you haven't done this before, so I'd suggest going with the gas grill. Heat it up to about 75% of max and throw your food on the grill. Make sure you keep an eye on it so you don't burn it. Try to resist the urge to turn the food too often.
Enjoy your bbq and good luck.

I like a lot of the other answers but you'd better make sure that you do a serious cleaning of the grill before you do anything else. Know matter how good the recipe a dirty grill will ruin the food.

Maybe try some slow smoked ribs. It's a little more advanced cooking than grilling some burgers and hotdogs, but it's well worth it. To read how to do it, visit http://www.bbq-recipes.net

dont forget the condiments! Plates of sliced tomato, onion, shredded cheese, relish, mustard, ketchups.
And some nice buns....drinks and ICE!
Maybe some ice cream for dessert and potato chips on the side of the burgers and doggies
Have a blast!

any chance your dad could do the cooking? if you have never done this before having guests be unwilling subjects to your cooking debut is really not cool.
