If you are entering Canada by aircraft (flying), you will need a passport to enter Canada, and return to the United States.

If you are traveling by land (car) you do not need a passport, but you will need some form of ID, such as a drivers license, birth certificate, or other form of photo ID.

If you live in the USA, all you need is a valid passport and the means to go there. If what you are really asking is the requirement for residency there, you'll have to apply for residency with the Canadian government. It used to be all you need is a valid drivers license, but not anymore.
