Lhasa Apso, Shih Tzu, Malteese are all pretty well known (small dogs) for being apartment adaptable. A number of people have told me their bulldogs do fine in apartments.

If you aren't sure what type of dog you want look at: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm its a short quiz that looks at things like desired energy level, desired size, living space, allergies, etc. and tells you what breeds would be suitable. You can also search the "best apartment dwellers" at http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/apartment.htm

If you find a specific dog that you like, check out http://www.petfinder.com/ to see if there is a rescue group or animal shelter in your area that has that breed of dog/puppy available. Rescue groups and shelters often have purebreds and sell them fairly cheap. Its a good way to get a good dog and to save a life!

I would get a small dog. There are certain breeds of dogs that are small, intelligent and don't shed hair: poodle, maltese, bichon frise. Make sure you take them for a walk 2 times a day. I have a toy poodle and he is very intelligent. He can do several tricks and is house broken. He has a very good temperament and is good around children.

I have a friend of mine that has a low energy male german shepherd puppy for sale. He is the cutest thing ever! He would be fine in an apartment as long as you take the time to exercise him. He also would keep people from thinking about breaking in your apartment with a dog as big as him in there. Here is the address http://weberhausgsd.com/littersavailable.html

Just scroll down and see if you like him. These are top quality dogs!

try a spaniel. they are very lovable, and come in varity of colors and sizes. need grooming, don't shed.
they are people dogs, so they love it inside, and need to be around their owners.

be sure you buy from a reputable breeder!

good luck.

research your breeds of dogs, then go to a dog show or rent a video about dogs, and their breeds.

they all are breed for something, some are better companions than others, some have high energy and need lots of exercise, some shed a lot, need lots of grooming. etc.

all dogs need love, food and shelter, and companionship!

good luck

Go to your local animal shelter and tell the people working there that you want a dog and then tell them your living arrangements and they will set you up with a ton of dogs who are in dire need of a home or they will be put to sleep if no one adopts them! And in my opinion they are THE VERY BEST PETS no matter what or where! They know you saved them from death and they will forever be grateful to you! I mean it!!!

Get either a toy or miniature poodle. They are extremely intelligent and are very loving, obedient , and loyal. so easy to train. I had our poodle fully housebroken in 2 weeks. And, if not exposed to young, noisy children, poodles are not the "yappy" dogs some people mistake them for. They are not destructive chewers, either -- and I keep on forgetting to mention one of their best features: they don't shed and are non-allergenic!! So, not a lot of vacuuming or dog hair on your clothes.

All in all, a terrific breed of dog -- trust me! It wouldn't be nice of me if I sent you "barking up the wrong tree"! :0)

Cocker Spanials are cute medium size dogs and they don't need to run alot. They like to cuddle alot though, which is a good thing!
