he passed away a year ago... i cannot put my finger on what he is because he is a mixed breed. I have plenty of mixed breeds (Husky x german shep, staffy x kelpie and so on) but this one i cannot figure out and it bugs me... he had short stumpy legs, a big head and looked nothing like his brothers or sisters... they are more of brown tall kelpies but still a mixed breed. .... so why did he turn out different? oh and he was born fat but he was the coolest dog EVER!!

well, umm,I have a lot of dog expierience and I fell in love when I saw the picture....
Because of the short legs and the body - I would say bassett hound or wesh corgi - his colors though are very diferent - he has rottweiler coloring - and I dont thing a dog that size could mate with a small dog like the corgi or bassett,so I would say like a dacksund or a small breed of terrrier or hound

IMO his paws don't look heavy enough to be a basset... more like a corgi. They are herding dogs and tend to be pretty active for their relative size (not hyper, just alert). The big head relative to the shorter height is also a strong indication of a corgi. As to which one... I couldn't guess because of the other breeds thrown in. Here's a link to the rescue and breed clubs of the Cardigan and Pemboke with some pictures: http://cardiganrescue.org/ and http://www.houstonpembrokes.org/
Also as to him not looking like his siblings. It's pretty common for a female in heat to mate more than once and with multiple partners. So unless it's a controlled breeding you are likely to have some variation in the puppies. In my informal survey of the street dogs in our neighborhood in Thailand, it seemed that about 3/4 of the puppies would look similar with the remainder completely different in build and coloring. If it was the same partner with different genes being expressed the odds would not repeat to that extent nor would the mix of recessive be so sharp between puppies. I would think this comes from the first mating fertilizing the most eggs and the second (third, fourth...) only the eggs left and probably the most difficult to reach.
Regardless he was a nice looking dog and kudos to you for adopting a mix.

Id have to agree with the Corgi or Basset Hound mixes....as these are both stout breeds. But it is also possible that your boy was a genetic fluke. A friend of mine had a German Sheperd pup with legs like that...they just never grew!

The short legs make me think he may have Corgi mixed with Rotti. Cute pooch. It is possible for a female dog to actually be impregnated by two different males. The same thing can happen with cats, also.

I'd say he's probably got a bit of Dachshund, Corgi, and Beagle or Basset Hound. It is hard to tell for sure, but he is a cutie!

Well, if he is not like his brothers or sisters then it was very possible that he had a different dad than the other siblings did. Dodg like other animals can have litters with multiple sires.

First thing to remember is that dog siblings can have different fathers, so they might not look like their brothers or sisters. He looks like a Rottweiler x smooth Dachshund to me.

He almost looks like a Bassett / Rotty mix.

Cutie pie! I think maybe a mini pinser/doxie/basset mix?
