Hi, having problems with a color scheme....the house i'm moving into is very airy and open feeling with super white walls (which i do like) and a VERY light minty/sage green carpet. I was thinking about kahki colored couches, maybe with mocha accents? Or what about plum? Or yellow?! And if so, how bright of a yellow? The house also has medium colored cabinets and silver hardware (doorknobs) and a focal point of a gray slate firplace. I need help with a color scheme!!!! I'm so confused!

I'd use the slate of the fireplace as the inspiration for color. is the slate a solid grey, or is there some other tones in it? A charcoal grey sofa would look great with the fireplace and with the carpets.some accents in brick red and silver would set it off nicely. a sofa striped in sage and silvery grey would also work. a chrome and glass coffee table would fit nicely with the scheme, along with a couple of black leather club chairs. even a zebra skin print would look great, adding a bit of wow to the room if used sparingly--maybe a couple of cushions, or the upholstery for a side chair. A large chrome/silver vase on either side of the fireplace would be a dramatic and semi-formal touch. Black and white prints on the walls framed in simple black frames. One piece of furniture upholstered in a bold Greenish yellow could add a lot of zing to the space.

Sounds like you're fairly flexible with your choices, so I have these suggestions:

1) Check out fabric sample books / swatches from a custom upholstery / drapery shop. This can help you get into the ballpark with what looks nice together. Then try getting a yard each of relatively inexpensive fabric in the colors you like. Drape them over furniture, or push-pin tack them to the walls. One at a time, or more, if you want to experiment with multiple colors. See how the light and various colors react with each other and your senses. You may come up with some surprising, but pleasing combinations. Note that, ultimately, the fabrics you choose may look slightly different due to texturing or color tone variations.

2) An Interior designer may be able to help you, but realize that their choices are most often biased towards what they like, or what they THINK you'll like. No one, however, really knows what you like better than you. If you don't like it, they are wrong.

3) Remember that it's YOUR home, and your interior decorator, sister-in-law, mom, best friend, doesn't live there, you do! Get what makes YOU happy. If someone else doesn't like it and says 'what were you thinking?' you can say 'I was thinking that the door is right over there ...'

Happy decorating!

I think that I would go with plumand then you could have pillows of different colors on your couch. You could also use this for your fireplace if you were to place chairs around it.
