Hi jenny818,
Jenny, you may be a victim of a sleep-phase disorder. If so, you are not alone. First of all, get rid of the word "normal" when describing your sleep habits. You are probably one of many people who have a different circadian rhythm than most people. Most victims are called "night owls." I suffer too.
There's simply too much info to list here. I'll list some websites below please check them out. If the info on the websites doesn't apply to you, there's still hope. If you're just suffering from shift work, follow the advise to help you sleep. I personally had to find a job that allowed 2nd - 3rd shift work for me to be "normal." My best sleep time is 4 am - 12 noon. It's been that way since my teens and I can't change it after spending thousands of $$ on sleep tests. I wish you well.

Are you on any sort of prescription or over-the-counter medication? This can cause this.
Are you trying to avoid some sort of situation during the day? At home, or otherwise? This is a common cause of this.
What line of work are you in? Is it especially emotionally or physically stressful? This will cause ANYONE to stay up past bedtime.
All of these explanations are a good reason to talk to your doctor. It really does rule to get up with the sun and start getting things done when you are naturally alert.
Which brings me to another point: do you just experience these symptoms during the winter, when the days are short? You may have a disorder known as SAD: Seasonal Affective Disorder. Which means you're basically not getting enough sun. I find myself naturally a little depressed during the winter, but my doctor helps me out with this.
Again, see the doctor!

Try melatonin, available at any drug store. It works really well for me, and for all my insomniac friends who've tried it. Safer and makes you less groggy than most sleeping aids, like dimenhydrinate. It's made of the same hormone your body produces to make you get tired. So when you take melatonin you feel normal-tired, not weird drugged-out tired like Gravol, etc would make you.
I take melatonin about half an hour before I want to go to bed if I'm in one of my stay-up-till-6am phases and have to get to bed early. After taking it I'll suddenly find I feel like it's 6am already and I'll actually WANT to go to bed.
Also I recommend Webber's sublingual tablets, I personally find sublingual melatonin pills work faster and make me feel less tired in the morning than the ones you swallow ('cause being absorbed from under the tongue means it enters and leaves your body faster).
If you can't find sublingual ones though, try the ones you swallow... They seriously work for me and everyone I've ever gotten to try them! Two of my friends who used to have hardcore insomnia use this stuff all the time now...

Its true, alcohol does that. But thats not the best way lol...Id say just lay in your bed a certain time and read a book you like. Thats if you like to read. It seems you are not comfortable, so find some way to get comfortable and lay down. I had the same problem but I started to lay in my bed and read a book or two, and drink some water and slowly but surely you wont know WHEN you fell asleep.
Stay away from sugars, or anything active, like loud tv, etc...

Had insomnia when my brother committed suicide.
Best tips: go to bed at a decent hour, whether you sleep or not. Don't get up and stay up , then adjust from there. Close your eyes while in bed. Breathe deep and don't think.

Take an over the counter, mild sleeping pill before you want to go to sleep, (like 9-ish) and continue doing that until you get into the routine you wish to be in.
