It all depends on your agreement with the owner of the stud dog. As others have said....this is usually decided before services are provided ( either you pay a fee or they get the pup of their choice ) But if no agreement was reached before hand....you can simply offer them the male puppy....or offer a fee instead of the puppy. Dont offer the female at all....or better yet; dont offer either puppy unless they ask.

If you did not have a stud fee, and agreed on pick to the stud owner then you have to give them pick. They pick either male or female. It is there choice! Stud services in not free when it comes to servicing a *****. The breeder takes the time to make sure the ***** gets bred, why should they get second pick? You should of paid a fee, then you would not of had to do this. When I am picking a pup from a litter, I look at structure and movement first. I don't care if the pups are males or females. Breeding is to better the breed. If the stud owner want's something out of your lines, then that owner has the right to choose what pup is best for them. It is very hard to make a choice on a litter even when the pups are 8 to 10 weeks old. Some pups need to be held back longer to make sure you are choosing the best pup in the litter. I raised 2 pups for a friend of mine recently. She is going to have to keep those pups for several months to make sure she keeps the best pup out of those 2. Right now I like the female over the male, but that could change. If you did not pay a fee, the stud owner gets first pick.

Generally the stud owner gets first pick of the litter (or the price of the puppy), but it depends on the stud contract. If you want to keep the female, just ask the stud owner if they can take the male so you can keep the female.

I'm not a breeder, but I think that question is supposed to be answered before the "stud service" occures......
sometimes there is just a fee, and sometimes the "male family" gets the pick of the litter..... I think is just depends on what the agreement was before the pregnancy.....

Unless you paid a stud fee, the owner of the sire gets first pick of the litter. That is the way it is done. I prefer a stud fee though. That way I don't have to worry about selling a dog.

It's normally the owners of the father to get pick of the litter for stud fee.

When we used to show and breed cats, the rule was that the owner of the male cat got "pick of the litter." That makes sense, since the owner of the female has ALL the babies at his or her disposal, so to speak.

It's probably that way with the dogs... but, they get "pick" of the litter... not more than that. Afterall, presumably, you are going to sell the babies once they're weaned. And yes, you get second pick.

Are you bound by a breeding agreement? If so, you are bound by the terms of the agreement.

Otherwise, if there are no agreements in place, signed or otherwise, the dog and the puppies belong to you. You can do what you want with them.

just ask the male dogs owner which one does he want or offer to pay a stud fee instead.

If you had an agreement with the other family, then you should abide by that. Otherwise, talk it over with them and see if you can reach any agreement. Good luck.
