try a puzzle or two, or legos, anything where he will have to sit and build for a while, maybe even a coloring book

Try getting him into dinosaurs or some kind of collecting, where he has to look at books and remember things. Or maybe there are some drawing or dance classes he can take, something that will use his creativity and energy? Learning dance can be rewarding and frustrating at the same time, so I don't know if he'll put the time into it.
I'd also look into getting him Dance, Dance Revolution. That seems to get kids moving, which will help him with his energy and give him some rewards for learning things.

Plant some seeds. My 4 year old and I have been growing tomatoes for nearly 3 months and we are just getting tiny ones now...Its great. Germinate them on cotton wool and then into a small pot. When the are bigger plant them in the ground...It sure teaches patients!âº

DINO DIGS- THEY ARE GREAT WE USE THEM IS SCHOOL WITH OUR ADD/ADHD KIDS.
THEY ARE GREAT DEVELOPERS FOR FINE AND GROSS MOTOR SKILL DEVELOPEMENT AND THEY ARE INTERSTING AND SKILLFULLY DO-ABLE (NOT A WORD I KNOW).
THEY ARE "CHUNKS" OF SMALL ROCKS OR SOMETIMES BIRDSEED MOLDED AROUND BONES (FAKE DINOSAURS) THAT THEY POUND WITH LITTLE SAFE CHILD SIZED HAMMERS. THEY KNOCK OFF THESE PIECES TO UNVEIL BONES, ETC. IT TAKES TIMES AND A LITTLE BIT OF EFFORT BUT IT'S SO EXCITING B/C EACH ONE HAS A DIFFERENT "FIND"
ALSO- GO TO A CRAFT STORE AND BUY VARIOUS SIZED STYRAFOAM BALLS A VARIETY OF WATER BASED PAINTS, SOME FISH LINE AND MAKE THE SOALR SYSTEM. PAINT THE BALLS-TIE FISH LINS AROUND A PUSH PIN- ISERT PUSH PIN AND HAND THE SOLAR SYTEM FROM THE CIELING AS AMOBILE. WOODED PAPER-MACHEE BOXES THT HE/SHE CAN PAINT AS TREAURE KEEPSAKE BOXES. BUY A BAG OF BUTTONS AND COVER A BOX AND GIFT TO A RELATIVE FROM THEIR "CUTE AS A BUTTON GRANDCHILD. PATIENCE IS EASILY OBTAINED IF THE BRAIN IS ENTERTAINED. IDLE HANDS DEVILS PLAYGROUND.
ANY CRAFT STORE AC MOORE MICHAELS, EVEN SOME WLMARTS HAVE GREAT CRAFTS SUPPLYS. TOYS ARE NOT ALWAYS THE BEST BECAUSE THE GRATIFICATION IS OFTEN TOO EASILY GIVEN. A CAFT ALLOWS SAID CHILD TO USE AND ENHANCE THE IMIGINATION AND THATS THE BEST WAY FOR GROWTH.

My six year old nephew really likes to do age appropriate cross word puzzles. He has to sit there & concentrate on looking for the words. You might try that. :) Oh, and I found a cool website where he or you or his parents could even create his own crossword puzzle.

I don't think that a toy will help with this. He needs to learn to be patient by being made to wait for certain things that he wants.

It's not really a toy, but how about baking? Waiting for cookies to bake will teach him patience, but then he gets the cookies as a reward.

he learns to be patient by being told to wait . its called time out . he will soon understand that everything isn't right now . we all must wait for all good things to happen .
