I am absolutely terrified of the dark, if the lights go out or something, i freeze, and wont move until i can see again...I have tried that thing where you expose urself to whatever your scared of, and its supposed to make it go away, but instead it made it worse...i tried it several times, and now i cant even sleep unless i have some sort of night light in my room...i know this all sounds childish, ecspecially for someone my age, but it worries me, and i want to know what causes this, and other ways to get over it...

There is nothing wrong with to be afraid of dark or anything in that matter, every human being is afraid of something.
I myself am afraid of the dark, I had a very happy and sheltered childhood, been a healthy and active teenager, married with the man I love and have children. Everybody in my family knows about me being afraid of the dark, and they try to help me.
My bedroom tablelamp is always on at night (who said it should not be), I don't go to places like scary attraction park's shows or tonels, or stuff like that, go to lbroght and happy places and don't go out somewhere when there is no light (you don't have to) forget the psychologists and Dr.s, there is nothing wrong with you. I know people who are afraid of height , or spider or their mother in law (just kidding). If you go to a Dr.s, they will just find some kind of sickness inside you(fake), and they will tell, you need to come for more visits(don't do that). be happy and stay always in the light.

I agree with the last post. I am not terrified of the dark, but I am left uncomfortable for reasons. This will not leave you. If you have to sleep with a lamp do so, it makes you comfortable. I think this has to do with perceptiveness, if you want to know a reason. I am uncomfortable in the dark because the dark leaves me helpless, as I cant see and I dont know whats going on. I guess call it fearing what you dont understand. I like to have a small light because I tend to wake at wee hours sometimes and I want to be able to see...

Also, this has nothing to do with pictures or hypnosis. I can be in a dark room with someone else and be fine, I can look at a picture of darkness and be fine with it.. Its just a personal preference thing.

I can only say to try the gradual desensitization again. This time, go really really slow, like look at a picture of a dark room. When that's not scary anymore, then go into a room and dim the lights just a little bit. When you're calm, dim them a bit more, and so on. Maybe it will take a few days or weeks, but you can get over it.

Try a hypnotist. If confronting your fears doesn't work, you might need some real help.
