If you are following a specific path like meditation you definitely need a Guru.

Meditation involves complexities which are beyond normal scientific comprehension. You will be connecting to your inner subtle existence and delve deeper into your mind. You will also be connecting to the subtle environment around you. If not done under guidance you may end up with some physical and psychological problems.

A Guru must be someone who has experinced what he says first hand and not someone who has hs knowledge from reading books. That is the utmost important criteria in a Guru.

A spiritual guide can be very helpful, but it is important that such a guide, besides being knowledgeable and having "gone before," should allow you to make your own mistakes and your own decisions. Some gurus/spiritual leaders get trapped in a "cult of personality" mindset where they are more important than the spiritual goal. So it is important to keep an open mind but also a wary one. Develop a sort of "moral compass" test whereby you continually evaluate the paths you are being led down...it takes time and many mistakes. A good guru will help you develop such a sense, but ultimately it is up to you to really formulate it for your own use in life.

Let me give a simple answer first.

Yes. A spiritual master will be a person who have broad knowledge and continue to seek truth, passionate to people from all background, and do not claim to be the master that knows all. The truth is: no one can know everything.

you need them when you are in spiritual kindergarten,to learn the basics, but when you get to graduate school, they are a hindrance.

you don't have to play the game at your local ashram of [ is the guru coming out of the door?] or [will the guru like me?]. or [ the guru is the giver of shakti-pat]. theses are all grade school games that you out grow.

shakti is a drug---and you can have any realization in the universe ,with out a ounce of shakti.they should make shakti illegal. if a guru has shakti,--run away as fast as you can , they are spiritual alcoholics. and no good.

a guru is necessary for-

1)to teach you the important things than the *** we learn at school which keeps us confined to this earth forever.

2)to enhance your qualities for spiritual quest.

3)to get help to go to that place where you are ensured eternal peace and happiness.
there are many other's but i think these are the main ones.

In Christianity we have our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ Himself to be the "head" of the Church. (And with great living hope, for the "head" of Christ is God.) As for guides, we have the Holy Ghost, which leads us into all truth. We have also been given shepherds, to feed us in due season, that we grow in that good pasture of our God. As for what we shall see in such, we shall see in them righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost, which is the Kingdom of our God.. Amen

Personally...no.
I am my own guide in life.
However for those who do not see organized religion as a viable option, but still feel the need for devine intervention/guidance it seems to be a good alternative.
