He has suffered with mental illness all his life, and has always had a place to stay while his mother was alive. Unfortunately she became very ill and passed away recently and he was evicted from the apartment and is living on the streets. His siblings refuse to help. I know he can benefit possibly from some sort of out patient program but what can I do other than point him in the right direction? He refuses to seek help .

You cannot force a person to seek help if they don't want it. However, if you thought he was a danger to himself or others, you could contact the police and ask for him to be placed in a mental health facility for evaluation, usually 72 hours.

He has lost his support system, his mother. And I bet he burned out his siblings long ago. Look in the phone book for a local support group and go with him, if he will go.

Just remember, you can only help those who help themselves.

My suggestion is to google NAMI and find your local branch. They would be the best route for finding resources, that he might consider. If he is firmly diagnosed, he should be getting disability ssi that would help him find a place to live.
Few people understand the hell families of the mentally ill go through.
