Very good question. I would say that when perceive something to be extreme, it is, but that is way too sketchy. I can certainly say that statements involving absolutes are extreme. 'All New Yorkers are criminals', or 'there is only one true faith'. Without further research and thought, this is all I can come up with right now. Your question makes me think defining the term is an important part of a realistic dialogue.

Are you asking this to allow for better communication between two parties? I ask for in pure simplicity I just went to the Yahoo reference dictionary and found this answer:
Extremist: One who advocates or resorts to measures beyond the norm, especially in politics.
With this in mind then extremism would be the advocating or resorting to measures beyond the norm. I guess one can of course apply it to religion and spirituality.
I do consider this a start, but now can we agree on what is the norm. It seems to me too many will not agree on a norm since all do approach ideas and concepts from their own individual mind set. So now where do we go from here?
Do give it some thought while you do smile and have a good day.

anyone who is overboard in any direction. ex. extremely conservative, extremely liberal, etc. it is hard to define because it changes from person to person. a liberal is more likely to see a conservative as an extremist than another liberal, and vice versa.
