There are advantages to each.

Some people bake them because they aren't as fatty that way. Of course, they won't then taste as good because the fat from good olive oil adds a lot of good taste.

I like to saute them, flipping them as they brown, in a good amount of olive oil.

You can also deep fry them. This is what restaurants do because it's easiest, they have a deep fryer constantly going, and you will get the most symmetrically round meatballs this way. They are also the least healthy this way though.

And the real traditional way to do it is to drop them in the sauce/gravy uncooked, and let them simmer with the sauce for a few hours. This won't yield the same crispiness on the outside, but native Italians, especially older ones, will swear that they absorb the tomato sauce better and flavor the sauce more as well.

Just brown the outside of the meatballs in some oil in a frying pan then boil in the sauce to completely cook the meatballs.

*Don't make the meatballs too large otherwise you will need to brown them much longer which could lead to burning or you'd have to boil them in the sauce much longer which could scorch the sauce.

I pan fry mine with the extra stuff I use to flavor my sauce then finish cooking them in the sauce while the pasta cooks. Baking them would be the lowest fat way, if you have a rack or something to keep them out of the fat. I would not cook them from raw to finish in the sauce, you might end up with meat sauce instead of meatballs

My nona's Italian Meatballs

1 pound of ground beef
1/3 pound of ground pork
Salt and pepper
1 egg
some virgin olive oil

mix egg and meat together until you can't tell which meat is which. season with salt and pepper and leave for 15 minutes.

Then shape into small balls and put them into a pan with the oil.
Brown them until all sides are firm enough to stay together.

Then put them into a simmering spaghetti sauce for a few hours to cook through. Adds flavour to both.

BEST SPAGHETTI SAUCE

3 cans of roma tomatos
salt
1 medium onion
5 cloves garlic
pepper
fresh basil
rosemary
tomoto juice
1 8oz can tomato paste
a food processor

take tomatos and put them into food processer until fine.

Heat some olive oil in a large pot.
Put the 5 garlic cloves in until brown. Remove garlic and throw out. Now you have garlic olive oil. Add onion untill all is soft. Use a low medium heat. Add rosemary halfway through.

Add tomatos, juice and paste. Heat until it boils. Then, let simmer on like "1.5-2" or so on the oven. Add few leaves of fresh basil. Stir

Add the meatballs. Stir.

Add the salt and pepper. Leave.

Taste every hour or so. Good to let si\mmer a total of 6 hours.
BEST FLAVOR: put into fridge 24 hours let flavors mix. Then reheat for next days dinner. Serve over your favorite pasta.

Blessings
David

I gently saute them in a frying pan, then add them to a slow cooker with spagetti sauce, simmer for about 3 hours on low heat! The secret to great and tasty meatballs is the meat, add half ground round, half ground chuck, tomatoe sauce,Italian bread crumbs,a 1/4 cup water or milk to that mixture, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, fresh garlic, sweet onion, chopped finely.

Cook in oven is simplier and cleaner I don't cook them al the way just more browning then put them in the sauce. If they are not well cooked they absorb the sauce better.

roll them and then brown them in a fry pan until browned and done . then they can be added to the served up plates . otherwise they will crumble apart in the sauce in the cooking .

Fastest way to brown them all at the same time is in the oven. I prefer browning them in a skillet in olive oil, and then place in sauce.
