Solidarity can be communal or individual. It is the concept of a firm belief with a strong desire to support that belief. From Lech Walensa of the union in Poland, to MLK in the US, to an individual monk who set himself aflame in the 60's, they show a solidarity to a belief. Something they believe so strongly, they will risk or sacrifice much to advance understanding of their belief. That would be the definition in R&S.

Now, if you'd like a physics definition, let me know.

Solidarity means belonging to a union and paying dues to a untion and having a union representative at your side if you have a bone to pick with the conditions where you are working.. PLUS.. and just as important... the unions honor each other by not crossing picket lines of striking fellow union members who are engaged in a strike against a company where they are employees.. Its is effective to get safety measures installed.. wages raised.. health insurance for all employees.. etc
