The best thing you can do is make your way to your local bike shop. They will ensure that you are fitted with the right sized bike and all the correct adjustments are made. They will also give you good tips and advice, on bike choice, clubs to join and pretty much anything to do with cycling.

If you don't get one fitted then you risk an uncomfortable introducion to the sport. The bike will probably wind up in the garage and you will deny youself one of lifes simple pleasures.

They will love you, petite 25 year olds girls are what brightens up a bike shop workers day.

At least TRY the Trek Sole Ride bike as being a new rider -- you may find comfort and ease of touching the ground at a stop is much better than
suddenly becoming an all out mountain bike freak. Remember, THE TIME you continue to spend ACTUALLY ON THE BIKE will be the biggest sales tool to convince yourself that bicycling is for you. Since it's winter, you might find some good deals on last years. Check your web sites for info for various brands. Giant, Trek, Specialized, Diamondback, Cannondale, even Schwinn
as you'll be learning a lot the first year and might change bikes. Mfrs web
sites will help you decide about comfort, mountain, and "hybrid" [in between].
Have FUN! Greg

Head over to your local bike shops. Tell them exactly what you are looking for and how much you are willing to spend. If they try talking down to you or pushing you into a bike that costs way more than you want to, walk out. Go to another shop. Make sure you feel comfortable on the bike and that they let you take it for a test ride. You want to be able to have a good relationship with the shop in case you ever need to upgrade parts, get repairs, etc.

Before you go, do some research into some of the major brands (Trek, Giant, Cannondale, Specialized, etc.). If you plan on going off-road at all, look at their entry level mountain bikes. The tires won't be as good as others on pavement, but any other bike won't be worth anything on a trail. Also don't let them talk you into needing a "women-specific" bike. Trek and Giant both make women's specific bikes, but not all women fit into those bikes properly.

If you plan on long distance cycling 20 to 50 miles I'll stick with a road bike. Pick a bike with components of shimano 105 or bette. A hybrid or cross bike will run good on pave and you can take it off road. A mountain bike should work on both but will run slow on the road. Checkout bikesdirect.com and see what you like. I love road cycling but I recenlty bought a mountain bike and it's good to get out in the wilderness were my road bike can't take me. Other than worrying about mountain lions, bears, and rattle snakes , mountain biking is not that bad.
