I mean, come on. I pay good money for a race. You mean to tell me that they can't put some tread on the tires and race in the rain? F1 races in the rain, Champ Car races in the rain. The big three manufactures build cars that can be driven in the rain. I think that if you are a real good driver as Nascar claims to be, you should be able to race in the rain too. They do enough testing and Firestone, a division of bridgestone, make rain tires for other series. So what is up Nascar?

its because they really haven't deve;oped a raim tire that works good at the tracks .other than the road courses and then they would have to make the carswith the capability if using wipers at a high speed

It's been thought about long before by NASCAR. The only current rain tire that is available at NASCAR's use is a road course rain tire Goodyear came up with about 10 years ago for NASCAR. They actually used it in the rain while qualifying for the 1997 "Japan Thunder Special" road course race, which they use to do for about 4 years up until 1999.

Goodyear just has not been able to create a tire that would be good for all the other tracks where the speeds are 165mph in the corners alone. Thats the biggest difference right there. Road courses don't have the high speeds like an oval does with 25 degree banked corners... No matter the tread on a set of tires, they will not keep traction very well cornering tracks in the rain at those speeds.

Because Nascar still doe not have a rain approved tire to run in the rain with. They have tested several tires for rain but have yet to approve any for racing. I think watching a race in the rain would be fun and exciting myself and hope one day to get to see an racing event such as this--racing rain or shine..

And to follow up with the 26 fan there is already enough slipping going on the dry tracks due to the air dams and drift effects. Even with the rain tire for the road races they have to slow way down the normal speeds. The other circuits race on much flatter surfaces.

Good question really. I never really thought about it. I am pretty sure that nascar has special tires for road coarses. They should be able to race in the rain just like any other racing sport.

The reason why they don't race in the rain is because of the fact is from them driving at high speeds as it is there tires get slick as it is so could you imagine driving at 180 mph going into turn 2 @ Martinsville on slick tires as it is now the track is slick pretty scary. From experience from taking the driving schools (Petty) those windshield are not the easiest to see out of as it is and having windshield wipers is one less distraction needed when you driving in those cars.

NASCAR in concert w/ Goodyear has actually developed and tested a rain tire...but only for use on road courses, but it has never been used in competition. I agree, a rain tire should be developed for the oval tracks.

You try driving 200 mph in the ran with no wipers and nothing on the side window but a net. Even with "better tires" there'd be too many wrecks still and that wouldn't be fun either. Actually, next time it rains keep your wipers off and try to even drive 60 mph and move back and forth through traffic and you'll see.

They were testing at one of the road courses a few years or so back with rain tires, I don't know what happened with that. Jeff Burton seems to benefit from the rain tho... lol

At the speeds on the speedways it is not a safe practice but when the teams go to road coarses they could run in the rain.Goodyear has a tire and the teams are able to put a wiper for the windsheild.

Even with a tire made special for rain I think it would be to dangerous for the drivers they are going way to fast ...To many serious crashes if it was raining
