Purebred dogs are expensive. Look to pay atleast 250 for a good dog. However, it is well worth it in the long run. Think of it this way, you are going to have your pet for a long time (hopefully) so what is a few hundred bucks for a good pet. Plus, with a purebred, you kind of know what to expect as far as temperment, how big they will get, etc. You could always get a mut, but you it's hard to tell how big they will get and what breed the mother and father was. It's just kind of a toss. You are going to spend money, reguardless, on how much you pay for the actual dog. You'll have vet bills, food, toys, etc to buy with any pup you get. Why not spend a little more and get the dog you want, rather than just taking any cheap dog because you don't want to spend the money. If you are looking for a small dog that doesn't really shed, I would look at the papillon. Don't get a chihauhua. They tend to be agressive. Poodles are small and don't really shed. My grandparents have always had poodles and love them. Their fur is hypoalergenic for the most part too. Shih tzu's shed, don't get one if you don 't want shedding. I have a japanese chin and she really doesn't shed. Although, most dogs do loose their coat twice a year, spring and fall. All dogs will shed a little bit. You might even want to check out the yorkie terrier, however, they are very expensive so if price really is an issue, don't bother looking into these. They will run 500 dollars up to 2-3 thousand (yes thousands). Malteses are good, they don't really shed and they are small. Probably maltese and poodles will be your cheaper small dogs that don't shed much and are really good pets.

Definitely go to your shelter. You will not find a completely non-shedding dog there, but odds are you'll be able to find a low shedding one. If the shelter doesn't have any in or any that you like, ask them to take your telephone number and contact you whenever a new small dog comes in.
I had a friend who had a small mutt with wiry hair, the coloring of a typical Anatolian shepherd, and an extremely sweet personality. With patience and persistence, you can find just the dog you're looking for at a shelter.

OK, the name sounds pretty funny, but a cockapoo is a good small, NO shedding dog. My best friend is allergic to dogs and growing up her family wanted a dog, so this was the solution. It is a mix between a cocker spaniel and a poodle and they grow to be around 16 pounds. They are also mild tempered and great with people, plus they aren't a kennel recognized breed so sometimes they can be found for cheaper. I found some for as low as 250 on the site below (not too bad for a dog). Good luck!! :)

You pay for quality, that's why they are so expensive. Its like buying a $30 digital camera or a $200 one. The $30 works, but its not going to outlast the $200 (in most cases, and the $200 has a lifetime warrenty)... An expensive dog usually comes from a good breeder, and in the long run you save money on vet bills. The breeder only breeds quality animals to avoid passing health defects, etc.
I would look at http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/lightshedders.htm to view a list of low-shedding dogs. Once you find one that interests you check out http://www.petfinder.com/ to find the breed you are looking for in nearby rescue groups or shelters. They will cost less and you will be saving a life.

Depending on where you live you might be able to find a rescue that doesn't ask too much of a fee to adopt. Poodles and Schnauzers are the only 2 breeds I can think of right off that are non or low shedding. I know there are more but not too many. Keep looking. You never know when some one might decide that they can no longer care for their dog and want to give it away. Check your local news paper, vet offices nearby, and even your local dog shelter. Good luck.

I have a dachshund that doesn't really shed. I found her in the classifieds section of our newspaper. Call around at pounds until something you want shows up. You can also put your own ad in a newspaper saying you are looking for a certain puppy. You never know who has a dog that has had puppies and they want to give them to good homes. You can also put a message on www.craigslist.com and look for some on there also.

Well the dog I have has short hair and is small and low.
But he was pretty expensive.
He is a Minature Pinscher.....
But I would Google different kind of dog breeds and look in the local newspaper for ads for dogs that are up for adoption.
Good luck!

Try hitting up a local shelter or pound, you just might like what you see, at a fraction of the cost.
