The father of my son and I are now estranged and he has been constantly intimidating me and torments me with guilt. I am from Asia and when I got pregnant, he asked me to move to the US to have the baby and he will take care of everything. I left my job, my family and friends in a drop of a hat because I want us to be together. Before I was due, he told me to apply for Medicaid and other social services assistance to have the baby. But was denied. The baby came and I was rushed by my cousin (not him) to the hospital. Two months after, I started getting the bills but I am unemployed and he said it's ok. Now, I left the US because my visa has expired. Although he signed the birth certificate, is he accountable for my debt?

A man is responsible prenatal care. Depending upon state law, the percentage of how much he has to pay comes into effect. He has to pay for the care for when that baby was inside of you and until the child is overage either 18 or 21. It is best to find out state law that he is residing in because you are out of the country. Or, else, move to a very liberal state, where the laws are good for child support. Get on this right away!!!!!! Start filling out your applications over the internet. Download, fill out and mail from overseas.

When you went to the hospital someone signed a Financial Obligation form when you were admitted. If you signed it then you're responsible. If he went with you and signed it then he's responsible. They would have asked you if you had insurance or who is going to be responsible for the bill. He's not responsible just because he's your baby's daddy. The good news is you don't even live in this country any more and the hospital will most likely write it off or turn it over to collections. I doubt if they'll come looking for you in some other country. You might have trouble coming back to the states though.

I believe you are not responsible for any medical expenses if you are not a resident of the US. Many Mexicans give birth in the US (baby is now US citizen) and head back to Mexico without paying a dime in medical care.

So, you returned back to Asia and are receiving US medical bills? Throw them in the trash - no one is going to collect when you live in Asia.
