The Japanese suicide bombers of WWII were called Kamikaze's (Divine Wind in Japanese). They were brought together in 1944 by the Japanese high command with a few major tactical defeats looming overhead. They were created because of the lack of experienced pilots and used as a last ditch effort for the stubborn Japanese. The first know Kamikaze attack was on the Australian Flag Ship HMAS Australia, resulting in 33 deaths.

The men were pilots called kamikaze (the divine wind) a reference to a storm that stopped a mongol invasion fleet. The aircraft they flew varied widely depending on what was available but they usually were obsolete planes with little military value left in them. Though occasionally they would use better planes usually the dive and torpedo bombers as they no longer could be used in there traditional role as the US had total air superiority. Sometimes they would use older fighters like early model Zero's. the unfortunate thing was that the planes themselves had little chance of sinking a major warship they didn't have the bulk needed to penetrate armored decks and US navy damage control procedures were so good that only minor vessels like destroyers or other thin skinned ships were sunk. Though many were damaged and there were many killed due to there actions.

Kamikaze, meaning gods wind, term from the mogol and japanese war, when mongolians tried to invade japan long ago, wind blow and it sunk many mongolian ships, japanese called the wind Kamikaze, and used the term as the suicide fighter/bomber planes, officially known as kamikaze-tokubetsu-kougeki-tai or kamikaze special attack force.
there were also Kaiten, which was the submarine suicide bomb, which had crew of 2, and had explosives on the nose of the ship, usually lunched from the submarine. They were used before Kamikaze missions, and in dec 7, 1941 at Peal Harbor it was used before the airplane attack, whick was sunk before it did any, (kamikaze did not take place at the time, it became known in the battle of Midway and on.)
they were both hard missions and was first kind of guided missile.
not known to all, but other axis and even allies used similar tactics. germans at the end of the war used this tactics, useing me262 jet fighter as gunning down fighters, and BF109 as kamikaze fighter to go into allied bombers, which was alot more effective than shooting bullets at them.
before US entered the war England used airplanes called Harricats, which was a modified virgion of harricanes to lunch from ships. at the time era before 1938 japan was the only country that was advanced in the consept of aircraft carrier, and they only had steam powerd rail to lunch planes and had no way of getting plane back on the ship onece they are airborned, so harricats would lift off and fight the enemy and retured around their ship and basically abunden the aircraft, or some brave pilots would just attack to the german ships, the concept was if you were going to sink your plane why not you too.

These men were kamakazi's. They would go out on suicide missions because in they're culture to die in battle was a great honor. They'd purposely fly their planes into Naval fleets or into land units with the idea of destroying as much as they could. I might suggest watching the movie "Tora, Tora, Tora" if you'd like to get a better picture of what things were like during world war 2.

The pilots were called Kamikaze pilots and they used just about anything to ram into U.S. ships. The Japanese even had manned missile-like aircraft specifically designed for suicide missions.
