Typically the symptoms are:
1) Redness in one or both eyes
2) Itchiness in one or both eyes
3) A feeling of having something in your eye (or eyes)- or a general feeling of grittiness
4) Blurred vision or a sensitivity to light
5) A crusty eye (or eyes) in the morning from discharge. Your eye might even be crusted shut.
6) tearing
This is a bacterial infection and highly contagious- spread by contact. Example- you rub your, touch something, someone touches what you touched, they rub their eye. You may also spread the infection from one eye to both eyes, by rubbing (they are itchy remember?). You need antibiotics. If you work in a sensitive area- hospital, childcare provider, nursing home etc. it is better to stay off of work until you have completed the first 24 hours of antibiotics. After 24 hours of antibiotics, you will no longer be contagious.

They are the same as childhood pink eye. I don't think pink eye is differentiated. There is no adult or child pink eye, just plain old pink eye.
