His Toyota Camry was impounded over the weekend when a NASCAR official noticed an "unusual substance" inside the intake manifold that was not believed to be oil. Waltrip swears if it's anything, it's motor oil.
Any ideas on what it could be? Maybe a congealed nitromethane or something like that?

It's not jet fuel...I know I just got an update after I posted the question where the headline read like it was jet fuel. Jet fuel is kerosene, basically, and would run in diesel engine but not a gas engine. The article said it was an oxygenate that is normally found in jet fuel but had been added to the gas in Waltrip's car. This would boost the octane rating of the gas. Evidently, it had left behind a residue in the intake manifold after the fuel and air atomized in the manifold.

Octane booster would do nothing for the power unless the compression ratio was also increased. It would be like putting 92 Octane in a Pinto! These cars don't have computers that will help with horsepower just by increasing octane. Octane allows higher compression ratios and more spark advance without causing pre-ignition or detonation, which will damage the engine. Since they'd have to use the same engine on race day, and the regular fuel, the engine would destroy itself. NO to octane booster.
Jet fuel, JP-4, is likened to kerosene and is used in jet turbine engines. Airplane fuel is similar to racing fuel and is used in piston engine aircraft such as Cessnas, which have higher compression ratios to generate higher horsepower. If anything it would be plane fuel, not jet fuel.
Oxygenates are oxygen-releasing chemicals like MTBE and ethanol, added to fuels to help complete combustion. Sterno and other gel-based fuels are gelled ethanol and isopropyl alcohols (just check on the sterno web page). Doubt it was sterno since it has a pink tint.
Had gelled ethanol been coated on the inside of the intake manifold, the engine prep guy could have jetted the carburettor richer and the engine would have made a little more power since there was more oxygen and fuel reaching the engine. Not as effective as Nitrous Oxide (NOS) but it's the same principle... add oxygen and fuel to get more horsepower. My guess is gelled alcohol of some sort.... and I bet it was clear/colorless. The fuel is carefully watched and tested... they didn't put anything in the fuel.... I'd bet they coated the inside of the intake.

I watched the press conference too, I'm not a chemist and know very little about different types of fuels. My husband use to race a stockcar at a local track, most of the drivers bought what they called Racing Fuel, which was jet fuel.
What ever it is we all know it was a substance to make him be able to go faster. Rusty Wallace commented of why Mikey did Not choose one of his other back up cars instead of useing Reuitmans???? It makes me think that Mikeys back up cars are the same maybe??? I felt Rusty felt like something was amiss.hmm I wonder if Mikey plays Dumb as well??? Seems like Mikey should be well informed about things such as this, afterall he grew up being involved in it.hmm?????

Eh, Daytona isnt a music which will tell how more beneficial effective MWR is this 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. Yates can run up the front at Daytona, yet as you suggested very last 3 hundred and sixty 5 days wasnt strong at curious regarding the 38 and the 88 (now the 28), so its an same element. identity say his best shot is Talladega or Daytona though.

It should be K Y JELLY, he has been screwed.
I've heard everything from sterno to jet fuel.NASCAR said they have seen this before but not in a long, long time.
NASCAR even stated the sustance stuck to the inspectors hand like Vasiline. So there is a lot of intrest in the results.

From the way the officials were talking about it...you'd think it was something from NASA.
