per pound, deli meats are a lot more expensive than buying meat in other forms.
why is this?
i know they have to cure it and all, but still, it just seems like too much money to be paying $6-8 a pound for turkey or roast beef.

My opinion is probably because that deli meat has to be perserved which means they have to add loads of perservatives to it like salt which costs money. Then you have the machines that are needed to cook the meat so for the company, they are left with bills to pay for machinary and energy. Also, deli meats take time and patience to produce.

So basically, deli meats are expensive due to the extra labor that has to be put into it to make the product rather than having to just purchase a freshly untouched piece of meat.

I worked in a deli for 3 years and I can tell you that most people love their fresh sliced meat better than pre packaged stuff. I have compared prices before and the average price for a 1/2 pound package of meat is $3.99. So a whole pound of fresh deli meat would be $7.98 which is average. Catch it on sale, and it's a lot cheaper!

I used to get good sliced meat at this German market (Ohio) that was great because they used very little preservatives. The meat had to be eaten in several days or it spoiled. You quickly realize why store meat has so much preservative in it. It was the only meat outlet in the area recommended by the oncology dept. of a nearby teaching hospital because of its lack of preservatives.
I didn't consider it high priced because they use fresh, high- quality meat. Most meat processors use the older meats that they otherwise might have to toss out for sausage. There's less waste and more meat on a lot of cuts.

Dottie is nice. they are going to run sales from week to week. It additionally relies upon upon what kind or producers of meats they elect to hold. some delis will grant the two bigger end and greater inexpensive varieties of the nicely-known meats (roast pink meat, turkey and ham). while you're fortunate, your deli would desire to even carry Boars Head kind meats that are an superior end/bigger high quality meat (no fillers) and worth each penny! whilst paying for meats and cheeses out of your deli you may get as lots or as low as you elect and sliced as thick or skinny as you elect!

We are convince that having someone slice it for us somehow makes it taste $3-$5.00 better.

Because big fat lazy americans need their gross salted cured meats to make their big fat lazy sandwiches so they can be big and fat and lazy at their job. And they are too big, fat and lazy to slice their own.
