I have been many, many times and it's a great place to vacation. I have a few ideas for you. If you are up for exercise you can climb to the top of Diamondhead before sunset and watch it set from the top.(trust me, if you don't know what that is, you will when you get there...you can't miss it from Waikiki). If you will have a car you can drive to the most amazing little bay for a whole romantic day of laying in the beach and playing in the surf. The bay is called Halona Beach Cove and it is a small and romantic beach located on the South shore of Oahu. It is known from the movie From here to EternityBecause of the movie the beach was nicknamed as the Eternity Beach. To find it head out towards Hanauma Bay. The beach is on the right side of Halona Blowhole Overlook (you will see the little tourist stop for this) and you have to hike down the rocks from there in order to get to it. Once you get to the beach just settle down and enjoy the soft sandy beach surrounded by lava rocks and the breathtaking ocean views in front of you. Trust me, it is worth the hike down. Bring a picnic and spend all day there.
My last idea is if you want to see a lot of the island (I'm assuming you are staying in the tourist-packed Waikiki area). The last time I was on Oahu we drove out to see the north shore and on the way we found a beautiful beachfront campground. I'm sorry I don't remember the name but I'm sure you could find it on the internet somewhere. I personally think that spending a night or two camping on the beach would be amazing.

Well those are my top three suggestions. I highly reccommend Eternity Beach though. It really isn't far out of Waikiki and is worth every penny you will spend on the rental car. Good luck and have a great vacation!

I agree with Mary E - but be careful about which beach you are visiting. Some have squatters and are not so safe after dark. Waikiki is always patrolled.

If you are there on a Friday night, check out the Hilton Hawaiian Village - they have a good show (free by the pool) and fireworks - then stroll down the beach toward the main part of Waikiki. Have a nice dinner - I love the Cheesecake Factory - but that's just me.
