It doesn't equal anything because 9 isn't in the pattern.
1+1=2
2+2=4
4+4=8
8+8=16
The only numbers in this pattern are 2, 4, 8, and 16 etc... It skips 9.

but if you're looking for patterns instead of arithmetic, then
it's 8
include 3+3, 4+4, etc.
