I am taking bactrim tablets for a stomach infection and having a hard time sticking to the recommended 8-hour intervals. When it gets to 12 hours, is it better to just miss one and then start again after 16 or take it whenever possible and try to get back on track?
Also how many days should I stay on them ? Ten days feels instinctively excessive. Could he have been wrong?

Taking them at the right intervals keeps the proper amount of antibiotic in your system, making it as effective as possible. If your doctor prescribed 10 days there is a reason, finish them all. I have taken Bactrim for kidney infections and the doctor prescribes a longer treatment because I have a history of infections. If you don't finish them the infection could recur, which makes it much more difficult to treat. Listen to your doctor, they know what they're doing most of the time. Good luck, feel better.

If you miss, take the next dose as soon as you realize you've missed, and then the following 8 hours after that, etc.

And no, 10 days of bactrim is not excessive for many infections. DO NOT stop taking them before you are supposed to, even if you feel better (or whatever infection was present seems to subside). This is how antibiotic resistant pathogens evolve. Finish the course.

Ok first question, its always best to take the missed dose as soon as you can and then just wait the next 8 hours to take the next dose. Second question, depending on the infection I have seen antibiotics given for a month. Bactrim for ten days doesnt seem excessive to me.(pharmacy technician not a pharmacist)

don't wait and start over; try to stick to the 8 hour plan, but if you get behind take it and get back on track. also 10 days is not excessive and if you stop it early the bacteria will have "gotten use to it" and not really be destroyed so often times the infection just gets worse. There is no such thing as "left over antibiotics"
