They used the spare.
An off road vehicle came by and they almost always have air compressors to re-inflate their tires after 4 wheeling.

The driver who was not a teen had an air compressor.
He drove away without filling the tire and just rode on a flat.
He hopped a ride with the teens in their car.
The driver stood on the road to wait for another passerby. The riddle doesn't say he was driving anywhere when he got back on the road.

The teens give a ride to the guy cause it never said that he was on the road in his car. It didn't say whose car he was using. They don't inflate the tire.
