that is true because that is a word from God
"Gen 2:21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
Gen 2:22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
Gen 2:23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

The stories of Genesis were intended to reorient the worldview of the Israelites when they were in the desert coming out of Egypt. The Israelites had a very negative, painful view of the sex and the world. Among the various things that this passage does is that it puts male and female together as codependants, which was probably radical to the people back then.
Whether or not Adam and Eve existed doesn't matter. The principle remains: male and female were designed for each other.

Gen. 1:27
So God created people in his own image;
God patterned them after himself
male and female he created them.
Gen. 2:21-22
So the Lord God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep. He took one of Adam's ribs and closed up the place from which he had taken it. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib and brought her to Adam.
God chose to make Eve from the man's flesh and bone. In so doing, he illustrated for us that in marriage man and woman symbolically are united into one.
This is what the Bible says, so this is what I believe as Truth. There are alot things in the Bible that are unexplainable. God is at a totally different level than what we are, and we can't be expected to understand things that he does.
God forms and equips men and women for various tasks, but all these tasks lead to the same goal -- honoring God. Man gives life to woman; woman gives life to the world. Each role carries exclusive priveleges; there is no room for thinking that one sex is superior to the other.

I am an Atheist however I do believe that the bible has good stories to use as examples in how you should live your life. I believe that the bible should not be taken literally as most of it is euphemisms and parables. I think the point of this story (whether it is god's word or invented by man) is that men and women are a part of each other not that women are of lesser importance.

I'm amazed at some of these answers. Eve was created from Adam's rib. Rita put it very nicely.

No wonder men like to eat spare ribs...Seriously, folks, the male before female simply reflects a valuing of male qualities over female qualities. Now you get to figure out what are male and female qualities. Carol Gilligan is a good place to start: LOVE AND CARE AS MORAL EMOTIONS is the section to read in the document referenced below.

No, that is misogyny, jealous men who want so badly to be the creators of life when it is women who create life. Men must admit that women give birth and that every man on Earth came out of a woman but the FIRST woman came from a man, oh no she didn't, that's a bunch of malarkey.

Count your ribs. Now go count your GF's/BF's ribs. Notice anything? That's right, you both have the same amount.
Well done, you passed.

No... Adam was first and Eve was created from his rib.
If anything.. think equality; not feminism.

Woman was not created from man's feet, to be walked upon. Nor was she taken from his head, to be over him. Woman was made from man's rib - from his side, to be equal; under his arm, to be protected; and near his heart, to be loved.
