It's a holy month of fasting and prayer for muslims. muslims do not eat or drink from sunup to sundown for the days of Ramadhan, offer extra prayers, pay extra charity. It is to help get closer in piety, and to remember the suffering of those who don't eat because they are poor. Muslims also read the entire Qur'an during the month of Ramadhan, in 30 equal increments. At the end of the fasting month is Eid, which is a celebration of breaking the fast and giving gifts. ramadhan begins and ends with the sighting of the moon, and is based on the Islamic lunar calendar, so it begins and ends on diferent times each year (according to the roman calendar) you can learn more about ramadhan at Islamicity website.

The fourth pillar of Islam which is fasting is called Ramadan (in Arabic: رمضان, Ramaḍān) – or Ramzan in several countries – and it is the ninth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, established in the year 638. It is considered the most venerated, blessed and spiritually-beneficial month of the Islamic year. Prayers, fasting, charity, and self-accountability are especially stressed at this time; religious observances associated with Ramadan are kept throughout the month. God prescribes daily fasting for all able, adult Muslims during the whole month of Ramadan, beginning with the sighting of the new moon.

According to the fuqaha — Islamic jurists and legislators — in 2006 the month of Ramadan (1427 AH) began on September 23 (Middle East, East Africa, North Africa and West Africa) and September 24 elsewhere (including Turkey, North America, Southeast Asia, and the rest of the Middle East). In Pakistan, excluding some parts of North-West Frontier Province (NWFP), it was September 25. It lasted through October 22 or October 23.

Is an islamic holiday held around Christmas time. Its greeting is, "Ramadan Mubarak." I believe that means Blessed Ramadan. Muslims are supposed to fast and refrain from doing alot of stuff they normally would do like eating, smoking & sex. I believe they can eat after the sun goes down or something like that unless you're sick, a kid or pregnant.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Every day during this month, Muslims around the world spend the daylight hours in a complete fast.
During the blessed month of Ramadan, Muslims all over the world abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours. As a time to purify the soul, refocus attention on God, and practice self-sacrifice, Ramadan is much more than just not eating and drinking.
Muslims are called upon to use this month to re-evaluate their lives in light of Islamic guidance. We are to make peace with those who have wronged us, strengthen ties with family and friends, do away with bad habits -- essentially to clean up our lives, our thoughts, and our feelings. The Arabic word for "fasting" (sawm)literally means "to refrain" - and it means not only refraining from food and drink, but from evil actions, thoughts, and words.

During Ramadan, every part of the body must be restrained.

The tongue must be restrained from backbiting and gossip. The eyes must restrain themselves from looking at unlawful things. The hand must not touch or take anything that does not belong to it. The ears must refrain from listening to idle talk or obscene words. The feet must refrain from going to sinful places. In such a way, every part of the body observes the fast.
Therefore, fasting is not merely physical, but is rather the total commitment of the person's body and soul to the spirit of the fast. Ramadan is a time to practice self-restraint; a time to cleanse the body and soul from impurities and re-focus one's self on the worship of God.
