My name is Sarah and I'm interested in becoming Muslim...I'm new to Vancouver, WA and I'd really like to meet some muslims in my area to help me learn about Islam before I say Shahadah. I'm also very interested in learning how to speak and read Arabic so I can read the Quran in it's original form. If you or anyone you know would be interested in helping me meet new people, please let me know!

And I've found all the on-line resources, but I'd really like to meet people in person to help me.

I'm not too sure if it's a good thing for you do, Sarah; considering that you live in Vancouver, WA and are a White woman.

I'm saying this because you'll need to consider the negative connotation that Islam has where you live, especially after 9/11 and all the other events.

I frankly don't think you'd have an easy time after you come out of the closet, so to speak.

Well, it's your life and you should do what you feel is right; but, then, just consider the consequences first and be diplomatic, is my advise.

All the best.

Cheers.

Looks like you're in luck and have a guy who's in your neighborhood who can help you!

All the best!

I would get in touch with the local mosque talk to the Imam ask him if he can introduce you to some Muslims your age etc. He can aslo help you out with where and how to learn Arabic. I hope Insha Allah you find all the information you are looking for. Sorry i cant be of more help but i live in the UK and obviously dont know to much about how things work in Vancouver. I myself reverted to Islam just over 2 years ago and i also learned as much as i could before taking my Shahadah, i think you are doing the right thing in trying to gain more knowledge and information before making any decisions. Good luck, peace to you.

Two extra comments.
Simon Templar - I am a white woman and a Muslim and Muslim women come in all colours and nationalities. Nothing untoward has ever happened to me. What has 9/11 got to do with Muslims? I did not commit a terrorist act, Islam did not commit a terrorist act. What has it got to do with me or my religion. Should all catholics feel responsible for the actions of the IRA? No of course not dont be ridiculous.

Just to point out also it is against the teaching of Islam to separate into sects ie. Shiite, Sunni etc being a Muslim does not have to be proceeded with anything. Following the Quran and Sunna is all we are required to do.

First u need to understand is that being a muslim is not easy, and muslims follow their rules and regulations seriously(well majority are, atleast). U can be a muslim without consulting a imam ,it is not compulsory .(that is if u dont respect that particular imam in ur neighbourhood) u can read quran in english if u want to . In islam there is no middle man between the god and the believer, and there is no preisthood. Its very Important that u get correct information about islam and not be misguided ( it is very easy nowadays) dont fret, Submit yourself to god and see that how god take care of u. you r new so mistakes at the beginning is forgiven

Hi there Sarah!! I'm really glad that you have decided to convert to Islam and see past all the negative stereotypes and things that people say these days about Islam and all that crap.

Islam is a religion of peace, unity, harmony, and tolerance...extremism is strictly forbidden.

E-mail me at: type_r_2ner@yahoo.com

I'd love to hear from you!!! =)

I'd suggest you go to a local mosque and ask for the imam, ask him all that you need to, after that I'm sure you'll meet a few Muslims in the mosque and I'm even more sure they will help you, and I'll help you too, just IM me or E-mail me :)

Peace
