The role of the parent is to teach the little person all the tools (s)he will need to survive in life. While this is going to be different for all people, the ultimate goal is not. We can all teach our children to not hold their hand out waiting for gimme's, to push themselves daily at getting better and better, and to never settle for the next best thing.
The parents also need to be responsible for teaching the little person a good moral barometer, one of tolerance, one of open mindedness (although that's a statement most religious people dont seem to get), and that life is precious, mea culpa etc..
Good luck

To take care of the physical, emotional and mental, educational, needs of thier children. Raise them to be decent, honest, responsible adults that respect themselves and others.
Enjoy thier children as much as possible.
What being a good parent It is not, is to be thier best friend and do what ever the children want at the cost of all I mentioned above.
