What is the crime?
If the person was on probation for handgun violations and was arrested with a handgun....
If the person was on probation for assault and was arrested assaulting a witness....
If the person was on probation for selling lots of meth and intimidated a witness who was going to testify against another distributor....
For a judge to set $450K bail, the judge is giving the person a chance to post bail and remain a free citizen. If that person makes bail and kills the witness - what would have been the point of having bail?
No bail would be a way to ensure the witness' safety.

No, Yes... Maybe if we new what the probation was for as well as the violations. Tampering with a witness is a pretty serious issue... obstruction of justice, perjury, blackmail, threats maybe... the whole case/trial upside down and backwards, it's bad. The fact that he was on probation means that he was already at the mercy of the system and just showed them more how he shouldn't be out doing whatever.

Usually bail is 10% I think, which would be $45,000. No, I don't think it's that extreme. If the person has a prior criminal record, then the judge takes that into consideration when deciding how much the bail is.

No, it sounds like the proper amount to keep a career criminal off the streets. This person sounds like someone who can't stay out of trouble (they're already on probation) and will resort to witness intimidation or bribery to sway testimony their way. This person probably doesn't deserve much sympathy.

Why should they be bothering with bail? He was on probation - just rescind the probation and let him do his time.

The bail should be anything that the judge who heard ALL the facts thinks it should be.
