the trick to getting a great dog no matter what breed (although I think mutts make the best dogs) is to get the submissive pup of the litter. All they want to do is please you and would never hurt a child. Train them with rewards and they will do anything for you. A friend once told me "get a herding dog, they will never run away." It has worked for me :)

Shih Tzu
Pug
Boston Terrier
Sheltie
French Bulldog
These are some of the small breeds that are supposed to be good around kids. I think any dog can be good around kids if raised with them, and the kids and dog know how to treat one another. I have 2 Chihuahuas and 4 small children(9-1years old), and have never had any problems, and most people will tell you Chihuahuas are horrible with kids. It is all in how you raise the dog, and you must also teach your kids how to behave toward the dog. If you do this any small dog breed you like will be fine. Just remember to research the breed so you know what areas the dog will need the most training in. Good Luck finding the perfect dog for you and your family.

Boston Terriers are great dogs, they have boundless energy when it's play time, but are content to lay on your lap for a nap or two also. They are great with kids and don't have that nippy, nervous, yappy, "my momma" attitude thing that some of the chihuhuas and small poodley dogs get. Another great breed is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel they are real soothing dogs and are non-aggressive and never nervous. They are real hardy so they won't break when junior pickes them up. They enjoy lots of company.

We have a silky terrier, and he's awesome. He's a little on the chubby side, but he's only 20 lbs, mellow but with bursts of intense playful energy, and gets along great with our son. The dog was around b4 the baby, but now the baby's a fur-pulling, claw pinching two year old, and I've yet to see the dog do more than an under-his breath growl, and a gentle wrist nibble for a chastisement. Hoover (our dog) lives up to his name as a vacuum cleaner on four legs, but it sure helps when the baby spills his froot loops. He's submissive and eager to please-- he cries if I yell at him-- but still has a bit of the terrier attitude, and he murders stuffed toys like a rodent-hunter should.

get a medium size mixed breed, something with terrier and hound. with young children, a small dog would not be good. they are too delicate and often high strung. a dog around 20 to 30 lbs would be perfect for both your kids and your husband
