I already tried asking this in the business section, but all the cool people hang out in the religion section, plus the business guys are asleep by now I think, so I am asking you. I am supposed to do an exploratory essay about some sort of problem in business. It needs to be a complicated one without an easy answer, because I am not necessarily trying to persuade anyone of anything, other than that this "problem" is not as easy to fix as it seems. I've thought of maybe the idea of a flat tax as one that is controversial, but I may be a little under educated about that topic. Anyways, any other suggestions would be great. I would really appreciate serious answers and it would mean a lot if you could switch gears for just one second and help me out. Thanks.

I think you are on to something Neil. I like the thought that business has become the focus of our ethics.(If I understand your comment correctly) I think it just might be vague enough for my paper!

Not much good with business, but flat tax is a good one and worth learning about as it could really affect you.

On the way home from Church a fellow was talking about a tariff on foreign cars specifically China and Japan. His thought was that they are undermining American companies and driving them out of business or worse yet pushing them into other markets outside of America. Also the American companies are willing to do this as they do not care who they sell to as long as they get money. Plus I think the Asians are under valuing the Yen to make this happen.

I hope this might be of value to you good luck.

And you certainly could look at a problem of flat tax for business. It really is not a problem, but an overall change in the tax payment and system. The problem with a flat tax going into place are what level do you put a flat tax on that will allow businesses to continue to thrive and not to place a large increased burden on government and government programs. A flat tax looks wonderful in theory because all entities pay the same flat tax rate. However, it may discourage small business from entering the marketplace or move more people away from declaring their businesses, depending on the level of that flat tax. There are additional solutions that you could look at, if needed. Currently depending on where the company is located in the world, there are progressive flat tax levels based on NIBT. That appears to be the most adopted level of taxation, however it also encourages the companies to try to reduce their NIBT as much as possible to pay less tax (using all the loop holes). Not that it is a problem with reducing the amount of tax paid, however if all corporate entities paid tax, it would reduce the amounts that all would have to pay.
Hopefully that assisted a little. It is a good question and certainly has unique problems that are associated with it. There are numerous other problems in business that you could focus on, but this one certainly has a business and economic focus.

Oh and FYI not all business people in bed at this time.

The first thing that came to mind is the problem businesses are having with the escalating costs of health care. Another is the problem of the vagueness of "Family Medical Leave Act" which is excusing excessive absenteeism (it is being abused a lot). There is also the issue of employees excessively using the internet for personal reasons on company time which is reducing productivity. Companies are also having problems finding reliable employees to do manual labor positions. US companies are also having problems dealing with our litigious society and paying higher insurance rates to cover them in case they are sued. There is also the high cost of labor in the US if a company wants to do business in a global market. If you are considering the consequences of the flat tax on companies, you may also consider the "Fair Tax" bill that is before congress right now. Neal Boortz has written a short book on the subject or you can Google it.
This explains it some:

Business language is obviously narrow. Since business has become the main economic support of much of the developed world, requiring that most of our time be spent in this domain of function, our everyday language has been forced within the language of business. Ethical considerations falling outside of a business mentality are far to nuanced to even speak of meaningfully in business terms. How will this effect our sense of justice, right, wrong, etc.?

you are uneducated about a flat tax???? It isn't that difficult of a subject. A flat tax would require all people to pay an equal % of their income in taxes. Obviously this is not fair because 25% of the income of someone who makes $25,000 per year is a lot more important to him than 25% of someone who makes $1,000,000 per year. Sure the person who makes more money would still pay more in taxes, but the 25% would be much less important to him and necessary for his survival.
