I am considering moving to Portland Oregon from southern california in several months. What is the cost of living for a single person (apartments)? How is the weather? Is there a music, art scene? Is there diversity? Job opportunities? Is it a good place to live? What is your advice on how to go about moving? I don't know anyone who lives there but from the people I have spoken to who have been there or are from there give me good feedback.

I moved here from SoCal in '93. Wouldn't go back. We have a family and live in the burbs so no real comparison with So Cal quality of life. Apartments are all over the board. Depends on where you want to live. Weather is a constant drizzle for 9 months of the year. Dallas gets more rain than Portland but they get it all at one time, we get it constantly. Music and art scene are fantastic. Check out the Portland Art Museum, 23rd street, Pearl District, east side, etc. Lot's of great small clubs for music. During summer, they hold First Thursday which is a great chnace to meet lots of people and see lots of art - kind of like a gallery crawl.

Portland is often referred to as Honky town because of the predominanly white ethnicity. You can find just about any ethnic restaurant but may have to look hard. Culture is not as mixed because of the lack of diversity. Actually has a pretty active GLBT etc. culture - Portland is pretty liberal.

When I moved, I rented a truck, got some day laborers to pack it and hit the road. Couldn't find day laborers in Oregon so had to unpack myself.
