hit me, they would be picking their teeth up off the ground. If you don't believe in spanking, how do you handle a child who doesn't respond to timeout and firm talk?

So, some of you think that if they punch you in the face, you will use positive rein forcement. I would like to see you act rationally when they knock you down. And high school kids will do it.

I am a proud parent of a 22 year old who is in college and I did discipline her, but she never provoked me. She knew better.

I agree with you. I wouldn't last a day in the public spectrum. I want children that other people want to be around. That means discipline, not beatings, but discipline. So many people these days do not want to discipline their children and look at what we have to deal with. Kids that have no respect for their elders. I have actually seen parents trying to reason with a one year old. Amazing.

you gotta get tough with them. when i was in school their was discipline and all the kids knew it. all the way up thru high school. i was paddled more times that i can remember and guess what, i lived thru it. the blame for the kids being out of control today can be laid mostly at the parents feet. in the news now is a teacher being beaten up by a student. if that were to happen, and it wouldn't have, in my day we would have been locked up and the keys thrown away and, we would have been better off for it. today there's too much molly codlen the poor little babies.

LOL, "picking their teeth up off the ground" that was great. I'd be right their fighting on your side. That's why, I'd never teach, lol.
I use spanking when needed too. We do so much like the old days (pants down, over the lap) It's simple in our home. Do the crime, Do the time. My girls are NEVER shocked when they get a spanking. It's always a case where a clear rule was broken, and they know it. I think it's safe to say, since I don't spank often, not many of my rules are broken.
Good Luck

I worked in a high school for quite some time with teenagers with horrible behavior management issues, I was hit alot. I have scars to this day up and down my arms from my students. I never once hit them back, and always used the legal restraints that i was trained to do in situations such as that.
There really is very little that is better then watching a student who didn;t think they could do it, and who had a life unlike ANY that you or I could possibly imagine, walk down the aisle and accept their diploma, partly because of the love, patience and firm positive discipline that you took the time to show them, day after day, regardless of the physical trials they put you through.
I am glad your not a teacher as well.
EDIT: the teenagers i worked with were NOT special needs, they were simply "bad kids," I work with disabled people now.

Lock them in a room where they can't hurt themselves. I'm not kidding either. If a child is sincerely acting that badly, you've got to remove them and yourself from the situation. Give them some time to calm down and then talk to them about what happened. Give them choices. Children need to feel like they have a say in what happens to them.

I am a HS teacher in a public school. I am not in fear of any of my students.
To directly answer your question: In a school setting you have to keep your students interested and involved in the instruction. You have to respect the students as individuals and treat them as such. You have to care about the students. Teenagers aren't dumb and they aren't all bad despite what people say - - if they know you care about them they will respect you and do what you say. That's been my experience anyway.

I agree, beating the rotten kids with the 'board of education' will straighten them right out!
Same reaosn I dont teach, i'd beat the kids and then i'd slap their lousy parents when they came in to complain about it!
God bless Catholic schools where the nuns are still allowed to beat the kids!

Since this is under the category of Parenting, and not Education, all I can say is - I hope you have never "knocked your children's teeth out", that would a bad lesson to teach a child, and would be called "abuse".
