a solute can move against its concentration gradient by active transport like in the Na+/K+ pump.
Also, in secondary active transport, amino acids can come into cells via a Na+ symport mechanism. Ca2+ can be brought into the cell via a Na+ antiport system.
Voltage gated ion channels can also be used to transport solutes into or out of a cell like in the rising and falling phases of action potentials in neurons.
