Earlier today, I saw a nice looking dog (as in, the dog's coat was very clean looking and he/she looked very well taken care of). Judging from its look (white and grayish black fur, fairly big and strong-looking) I think its a Siberian Husky. Anyways, being someone that happens to have an interest in dogs (but never had one of my own) I took a few quick looks at the dog as I passed by.
I probably should have just minded my own business, though, because the dog's owner started with "You know, people from India eat dogs" (because he could tell I'm Indian). As far as I know, thats not true, so I said that I didn't think so. Then he said something like "Korean people eat dogs". I just ignored him and walked on.
I acknowledge that it can be rude to stare/look repeatedly at someone's dog, and I take full responsibility for my actions. At the same time, I wasn't sure what prompted him to say what he did. The statements seem too generalized. What did he mean by saying that at all?

And I have heard that dog-eating occurs in Korea, but does that mean that its ok to make every Korean one knows feel bad about that? Personally, I believe in "live and let live"...sure, as a person that would love to have my own dog(s) and likes being around dogs, I think it would be nice if nobody ate dogs in the first place, but if they do thats up to them and I wouldn't judge them based on that or make them feel bad about it. And this stranger doesn't even know me so I don't know why he tried to make me feel bad (if thats what he was doing). Maybe he was just making me aware of how some people treat dogs in certain countries. I don't think he meant any harm, but if he was trying to make me feel like a horrible person (whether I actually eat dog or not, which I never have and never plan to) I don't know.
I'm just saying that I don't think its right for people to so broadly pinpoint the Koreans and their dog-eating habits.

I mean, for all I know, maybe for some Koreans (or anyone else for that matter) who eat dogs, they may just consider it like any other meat and so may not think much of it (unless they're trying to reduce their meat consumption or something). Sure, here in the US, I've often heard people considering dog as "man's best friend", so from this standpoint, the thought of dog-eating may be considered cruel. But then some people in this country do eat other creatures, right? And in other countries who knows what they eat? So what right does someone have to comment on other people's eating habits?
As I mentioned, I believe in "live and let live"
And to be honest, its really ironic for me to be mentioning all this b/c I've been a vegetarian my whole life. So I'm sorry if I grossed someone out. I guess I was just trying to say that the way I see things, "its all relative".
I do not judge people by what they eat, so I do not wish to offend anyone via this post. Comments greatly appreciated!

Wow! 1st of all, let me apologize on behalf of all ignorant Americans that you will never get the apology you deserve from. That was just plain ignorant of that person to do! You should have set him straight, sometimes people take anything they hear and believe it, and once in a while they are open minded enough to let the truth in if it comes along. Being as uneducated as he sounds, he may have really thought that you wanted to eat his dog! I am ashamed to admit to you that yes, I have heard this generalization about all Asians. I never pay it much mind and usually try to correct the person if they will listen.

We got a black lab about three years ago. He is my daughter's pet and her very best friend. I have gone with her to obedience school, 4-H, county fair (2 yrs), state fair (2 yrs), and about 6 UKC dog shows. She patiently waited to be allowed by us to have a dog, and researched, and prepared, and I believe God chose this very dog just for her. He is like no other dog I have ever been around. His name is Duke, but one day while we were discussing him I said, "His name should be Blessing, because he really is a blessing." We both started laughing because it just sounded pretty silly, and I really don't normally say that kind of thing. Then we both stopped and said at the same time, seriously, "He is a blessing.". I just told you that because having Duke has really made me appreciate and have a love for dogs, I also find myself admiring dogs that I come across, and sometimes people react like I am some kind of crazy lady. Afterwards sometimes I figure they are right, but I don't really care. I am sorry that someone was even able to say what that person said to you. I suppose it would have been hard to stop thinking about it throughout the day. When that happens to me I have tried to be able to not care what people think but what My Father God thinks, and He has loved me and accepted me from the beginning. Just like He does everyone.

He has an issue with people of another country, that is all. Do not let that keep from you functioning as a normal person in this society. There is so many bigots in this world. A lot of my friends are from India, and I have never heard of such from there, but in some of the poorer regions in the Philipipines, it does happen. People do have to survive, but here we are a more civilized nation. Some people do not know how to react. I am sorry you had to go through that. God Bless.

I agree with everyone else - forget it he is an idiot.
As an owner of a Siberian Husky - with ice blue eyes - people are constantly staring at my Sundance Blue, and as her mom I am use to it. My husband says that she is the prettiest dog he has ever owned - and we are really proud of her! If he has problems with people staring at his dog - he better get a different breed!

I say he said it to be an jackass. And I would be willing to bet he's an jackass in just about every aspect of his life. there is nothing wrong with admiring someonde dog, evendently he liked the dog because he picked it and .. well nothing wrong with someone else thinking its a nice loking dog to. Now if it was a strange deformed kind of pet, I can see someone getting upset because people stare .. but come on ..... Chalk it up to immaturity and contine to admire.

That person is prejudiced and you should not let them bother you.
It is not rude to stare at a dog, but it is very rude for someone to make generalizations about people that they do not know based on their ethniciy and to call it out as if to humilate them. People like that make me so mad!
