It's because you get dehydrated and your body needs fuel to energize itself.

You don't actually lose salt as a previous poster suggested. You do lose water, however, and this sets off a cascade of events which leads to an appetite for salt since salt helps preserve water.

An appetite for food in general is common when drinking since alcohol causes glycogen depletion in the liver and blocks glucose synthesis.

You get really hungry because 'drinking' depletes your blood sugar levels. Important electrolytes, magnesium and potassium, are also severely depleted during heavy drinking.

Try bananas & milk instead of junk food as milk help soothes the stomach and rehydrates your system. Bananas are rich in magnesium and potassium. Also drink a lot of water.

Take care!

Because alcohol stimulates your appetite and when you're drunk you pretty much eat whatever's in front of you, which is usually junk food.

It's all to do with your blood sugar levels. Alcohol messes them around so your body is craving a fix. That's why the next morning you need a greasy breakfast and a can of coke!

When you drink, you pee...

When you pee, you loose salt...

Loose salt, you crave salt.

Additionally, think of the "Chinese Food" effect. Y'know, how when you eat it, you're hungry an hour later? The same thing can happen when you drink, since alcohol is a carbohydrate based fluid, like the chineese food is mostly carbohydrates. The body burns them quite quickly.
