braces + problems= ?

2007-02-14 14:13:12 · 11 answers · asked by omglikenoway 2 in Health Dental

ok ok so here's the deal. I NEED braces. It's not like I can't accept what God gave me, but it's a problem that CAN get fixed. Money is not a problem, but my dad suggests that i DON'T get them. Why? because SUPPOSEDLY later on in life, the ppl who had braces seem to lose their teeth at a younger age and/or have other dental problems. I thought it was just because WAY BACK THEN doctors weren't as advanced as we are today. But I'm not so sure. I'd really like some feed back if it's a scam that my dad came up with, or if it's really true and it still applies today.... I don't want to make the wrong decision..(please, i only want feed back from ppl who know what they're talking about)

I had braces over 15 years ago, and knock on wood I have yet to loose a tooth....You could wind up grinding your teeth if your jaw is out of alignment, and I have heard of ear and headache problems as well because the teeth were not corrected.

If I were you, I would get them.

Hope this helps.

With the technology advancement now it's 100% safe to get braces. The "teeth falling out" thing is just a myth. If you dad still isn't satisfied and you really want them, go to a local orthodontist together and I'm sure the Doc can answer any questions either of you have no problem. Braces in the long run are very worth it, especially since misaligned teeth cause many problems later in life like TMJ. Also, they're harder to clean. So having straightened teeth is one of the best choices you could make. And, they give you a gorgeous smile!

Absolutely false!

Braces have come a long way. Methods of prepping teeth for alignment have changed - they used to take out the cuspid to make space for mouths that didn't have room but now they take out the tooth next to it.

Your teeth will stay in your mouth for as long as you take care of them and keep them flossed, brushed and clean.

Braces can play a huge part in that. If you have issues with crowding then it can be really hard to get your teeth clean which can cause decay in between them where you can't reach. They can actually help you keep your teeth for longer!

If you have a bite that is off braces can help you correct it so that you don't get headaches anymore. Or you might wear on you're teeth strange because of the way you bite, they might get ground down and braces will fix that.

Braces are wonderful because not only do they help you achieve an absolutely beautiful smile but they help you keep your teeth clean and your bite perfect.

Tell your dad that he has nothing to worry about and if he's worried he should talk to your dentist and to the orthodontist that he's referring you to.

Good luck!

Answering to your question, having braces does NOT make you have problems in the future with your teeth. Instead, it improves your chances of ever having problems in the future.

If you look at it, having crooked teeth in the future will cause pain and discomfort because food can get stuck in them, you'll feel self cautious-- you get the point.

However, if you have your teeth straightened, its easier to take care of them because all your teeth are aligned. As a result, you'll have beautiful teeth which in the long run, will help you with chewing food better, cleaning your teeth, etc.

Let me warn you though, braces do cause a lot of pain in the beginning, so brace yourself! The pain will mostly go away by 2 weeks, so for those two weeks...enjoy some long meals of sipping soup through a straw. In the end, its worth it!

Congrats on getting braces! Good luck!

If you need braces and have the funds for them.. then get them.. Ive needed braces for a very long time and I just now got them a month ago. I already see my teeth moving straighter. NO its not proven that you can loose your teeth earlier by having braces. If you have a lot of crooked teeth and crowding.. dentist reccomend braces because its harder for your toothbrush to get around those crowded areas to brush properly. Which builds up to plaque and gum disease. When your teeth are straight.. its easier to brush correctly and floss. Taking good care of your teeth at a younger age will overall keep them from falling out when you get older.

You think you need them, and your dad doesn't... What does your dentist say?

If your dentist says that braces would be for only cosmetic reasons, then it won't be covered by insurance 99% of the time.
If your malaligned teeth are causing some sort of problems... headaches, TMJ, an impaction... then the braces are actually needed, and will be covered by insurance probably.

Next time you are at your dentist (assuming you go twice a year like you should!), and him/her what he/she thinks about the whole thing.

You should know what you are getting into tho! It's painful at first, can cause sores in your mouth, and is usually painful after every single adjustment.

I'm thinking that possibly your dad is making up an excuse because he doesn't want to waste any money? It is a big handful to go through, you go like once every month to get them adjusted and it 's like about a hundred dollars every appointment.

OR.. don't get mad at this, you're just over reacting about your teeth even though they don't look that bad. And your dad thinks that you're being dramatic about it so he just says no.
