I visited a few years ago and absolutely loved it. I'm fascinated (and scared to death of) sharks, so I wondered about it too. I spoke to a lot of locals about it while I was there and they all said the same thing. They don't see hardly any sharks (along the coast of Avalon anyway). There is a beautiful kelp forest all along the coast there and it tends to keep them out. This doesn't mean that they aren't there - boaters have sighted some smaller ones way out off shore, but none too far inland. Enjoy yourself - you really will be fine. They say the ocean water in August is like bath water so I hope you're going that time of year! It was still too cold in late April - but I went in anyway... just for a few minutes. :)

Be sure to stop by the shop Buoys and Gulls - it is so charming!

If you stay in the shallows, you should be safe.

Water temperature, food supply (schools of fish) and depth of water are the usual factors in determining where sharks will appear.

Talk to the local fishermen and the lifeguards. They will have a second sense as to whether it is a risky day to be in the water or not.

Congratulations!!! God Grant You Many Years Together!
