As you know, I am an Atheist... if you could recommend one book other than the bible to present your case for belief in god, what would it be?

Hans Kung, "Does God Exist?"

That's quite serious, by the way. Kung is an erudite and liberal believer who takes the time to engage very deeply and sympathetically with the major atheist philosophers.

EDIT:

Get ready to spend some time with it if you really try to read it. It's a big one.

'The God Delusion' by Richard Dawkins. I myself am a committed Christian but actually PAID FOR the audiobook to see what all the fuss was about. Needless to say, after the first 'paragraph' - difficult to tell with an audiobook ;) - I was so annoyed by the man's tone and attitude (Dawkins was doing the reading) I switched it off.

Maybe listening to another atheist speak will make you realise how atheists can sometimes sound to others. I admit it might not make you believe in God, though...

No, Mere Christianity is not a good defense. C.S. Lewis throws out some of the most pathetic arguments I've ever seen in defense of his religion.

Just planning ahead with this answer.

P.S. Neither is anything by Lee Strobel, as his book "A Case for Faith" assumes everything it wishes to prove.

UPDATE:
Check out the links and check out the reviews and descriptions. There is also another one but I can't even remotely think of the Title. Email me and I will give you the answer tomorrow when I can see my library. McLaren's book would probably interest you most out of this list.

Being an atheist requires the use of faith, strenuously more than of a christian, because you need to constantly find proof to support the fallacious ideas that life exists without some form of deity, even more, a source of power and wisdom that created all things. What you ask for is some celestial written tell-all source that even then will not convince you of Gods existence. In the bible it says"Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead"

This means whatever book you receive you will with a vigorous defense begin to dismantle it in a logical fashion. there what you ask for is a miracle, to actually condense the request. Maybe he will give you one if you asked.

The bible is good enough to support the Living God, you have time to repent and receive him, or maybe go to the God that you embrace upon your death.

Josh McDowell has a bunch of good books (my favorite, Evidence That Demands a Verdict). Also, David Albritton talks about America's Christian origins

these are three great books:

The Case for a Creator: A Journalist Investigates Scientific Evidence That Points Toward God by Lee Strobel,

The Case for Faith: A Journalist Investigates the Toughest Objections to Christianity by Lee Strobel

The Case for Christ: A Journalist's Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus by Lee Strobel

I believe that the author is a former athiest who investigated god/jesus and became a believer

"The Signature of God" by Grant Jeffrey. It gives historical, geographical, acheological and scientific evidence that the bible can be trusted. It also talks about the infamous mathematical codes. Happy reading!

Edit: I just finished reading "The Case for Faith" by Lee Strobel and it helped me to continue in my path out of Christianity :-(

I like Josh McDowell's "Evidence for Christianity"..but there is actually other good apologetic books too. Start from the historical facts...that is why I recommend this particular book.

I am an Atheist. I think the most developed theology is done by the Catholics. The most scripture based stuff is done by the protestants.

Sorry I don't know any books. That would be considered the MOST compelling.
