A white Russian.
(Equal parts Vodka, Kahlua, and cream or milk)
I worked 15 years as a bartender at a Hotel Restaurant. This was always a popular drink with a lot of businesswomen and guests.

RE:
What does a classy lady order for a drink (alcohol) at a bar?
I'm writing a story with a character ordering a drink, but I don't know what to have her order.
She's not exactly rich, but well off, so it can be an expensive drink.

As a writer there are a few ways you can go with this. You didn't mention anything about what kind of person she is or what the circumstances are, so if she is a strong controlling person, you could conceivably have her order a sweet fruity drink to indicate that there is some femininity or quirkiness to her. You could also have her order anything she "damn" well wants with no apologies or she could be a "mood drinker", drinking anything she might have a fancy for at the time. (That's what I do.)
If she's all business...a single malt scotch...12 year old or older might be the way to go. If she's in someone else's company and wants them to feel at ease, she might order the same thing they do or a beer. If she's trying to intimidate someone financially she might order the most expensive wine or champagne in the house. If she wants to put forward that she's totally in control of herself, she could order a non alcoholic drink.
And finally, if you want her to be completely off center, she could order a drink that's no longer popular and that most bartenders don't know how to make anymore like a Pink Squirrel. (My dad had TONS of the mix around when I was a kid...all I know is that it looked like a strawberry milkshake and had booze in it.)

It completely depends on her attitude, age, and surroundings. A ballsey lady might order a gin martini or a scotch. A cliche or nouveau riche lady will order a cosmopolitan or some variation of a cosmo. A foo-foo lady might order a chocolate martini.
You could have her order something like Stoli Vanilla or Stoli Raspberry on the rocks. This shows she can handle her alcohol, but also shows that she's not a man.
Good luck!

In my experience, a tramp will always go for champagne first. If she is sexually loose she will go for a martini.
truly classy? she may not drink alcohol at all! or she may not feel like it every time. She may simply want a mineral water like a san pelligrino. She might like a good belgin lambic (sp?) (fruit ale style beer about $20 a bottle)
Perhaps she is on the make and looking to bed down another character and will order a suggestive drink like sex on the beach just to tease the guy she is with and make him curious or uncomfortable depending on whether she is more powerful than he is....
It all depends. A TRULY classy lady will be polite, graceful, and elegant, but will NOT order something she doesn't like...

Come on! This is a perfect opportunity to insert a quirk to your character so she's not a stereotype (unless that's what you're looking for). Maybe in her younger days as a stripper, she formed a penchant for Singapore Slings, Alabama Slammers, or Gorilla Snot. Maybe she likes to crank back an imported beer, or maybe she likes a shot of mezcal with a barley pop back. It's your character though, but have fun with it. Best of luck, and here's hoping the story will flow like cheap beer at a bachelor party.

A classy lady orders what she likes. She orders it because she likes the drink, not concerning herself with what opinion someone would make of her because of her choice. A classy lady would also respect your choice in drink. This classy lady orders wine, because she loves it.
Cheers!

Don't do a cosmopolitan,it's WAY too much of a cliche, so Sex in the City. Do a gin and tonic, it's feminine,or else something exotic like a margarita (if it's a special event and she doesn't drink often enough to have a regular drink).

i usually order either glass of sparkling wine, cosmo, red wine, white russian, white wine, amaretto sour, beer.
Just entirely depends on my mood at the time, if I am going to dinner later, who am I with, what I am doing later in the evening. If I am having dinner later or going out on the town, I would usually have a sparkling wine or white wine, since they are lower in calories and not as much alcohol.
Also, I like to see what the bartender has for specials. sometimes you can find some interesting drinks there.
