the consideration of energy needen in manufacturing comes from many stand-points but the major is cost. lets examine cost.

From an economic stand point the production of energy and use of that energy costs money. The more energy required to produce a commodity the more $ you will spend thus making a product cost prohibitive due to energy costs.

From an ecological stand point. The production of energy requires raw materials. whether that comes in the form of coal, natural gas or oil chances are that one of those three will be used. Therefor the cost of creating energy has a environmental and ecological impact as well. The waste produced in strip mining or drilling creates environmental issues that we have yet to fully understand the cost is, in many ways still un-tallied.

On the reverse of this arguement you should look at the potential of a product to generate energy in the remanufacturing process or whether or not it will be energy efficient to continue to mine for the materials to create more or if you can turn worn out versions into new with out expending as much energy the next time around as you did in the begining. Lastly, does the amount of energy needed to produce a product exceed the value of the product for mankind? All things concidered do we really need a potatoe pealer that runs on cowfarts. Is something like this really worth the energy used to create it?

For plenty of reasons, depending on what you're interested in.
If it's cost, energy costs a lot of money.
It it's pollution, the creation of energy generally produces a lot of pollution (depending on your location).

Generally cost is the main issue and energy production is expensive.

because it costs a lot of money to mass produce materials such as metal. For instance recycling one soda can will save enough electricity to power your tv for 3 hours. That means nomrally it would take 3 hours worth of watching tv just to make one metal soda can.
