Claudia and Cat are so very close. I understand about the colours not being pure. Just try mixing purple, but there is a bigger reason why you can never get a true carbon style black by mixing pigment.

It has something to do with the difference between pigment colours and transmitted colours.

Because you are including the lighter colors and they will lighten the mix. True black can't be made from mixing colors - if you look at the ingredients on a paint tube of black paint you will see the name of the pigment and it's not "all of the above". If I remember correctly you can get a good black from using Prussian blue, Cadmium red and Phthalo green.

First you need to know that the colors come from three primary colors, which are: Yellow, Cyan and Magenta (NOT blue and red). When you refer to "mixing all the colors", what you need is just to mix Yellow, Cyan and Magenta, because all of the other colors come from this 3 primary colors.

black is a color all by itself. it cannot be made simply by mixing all of the colors together. You could try to add more of the darker colors to achieve a black look.
