if a drug is inhaled & passed into the blood stream, is there faster relief?

Depends on a whole lot of factors.

First: faster than what? Swallowing a pill?
Getting an IV injection? Going through a cental line? Transdermal?

Well maybe faster than swallowing a pill or sticking
on a patch, Yes.

But the drug has to be formulated to be inhaled
and to be able to pass through membranes into the
blood stream. Not all formulations can do this well.


Some drugs cannot be administered orally very efficiently because of breakdown in the digestive system.

Just look up "drug delivery" and you'll find a lot
of info on the subject.

The effects would be faster than taking the medicine orally. When you take something orally it must first dissolve then be absorbed. If it is a liquid it must still be absorbed. A medicine that could be inhaled would be absorbed faster and have a faster effect. Unfortunately, not many drugs can be taken as an inhalant. And, some could, but would cause lung irritation-not a good thing.

Inhaled chemicals are almost instantaneously absorbed into the blood stream... that is why smokers inhale, rather than chew tobacco, but chewing is third best.... second best is snuff that is sniffed into the sinus passages for that nicotine hit.

Some medications are dissolved under the tongue rather than swallowed for faster absorption.... or as a suppository, rectally

The drug is absorbed thru the mucosal lining of the nostrils therefore it passes into the blood stream much faster than say an oral drug.

For disease such as "Asthma" it is better to have inhalers. In these cases, better relief is obtained by inhaling the medicine, Asthalin for example. Eventhough we can take tablet or syrup, better and faster relief is obtained by inhalation.
