What it means to be a leader (in the military). That you have been judged worthy of an awesome responsibility - to give orders that may result in the death of somebody you gave that order to. It means that - every day - you have to make sure that you are worthy of such a responsibility.
The responsibilities of a leader are first - achieve the mission and second, the welfare of the people assigned under you. A leader is responsible for and accountable for anything that happens to your subordinates - and anything they do.

The first step in leadership is learning how to follow. Don't expect to be respected just because of your position. Troops will respect the rank always, the man wearing it must earn it. As a leader you must be able to accomplish your mission and that may mean that men die. You must learn to live with that. At the same time, always take care of your men. The leader should be the last to eat or rest after making sure his troops are taken care of. A leader is in charge, but must put others before himself. Listen to your men, learn from them, love them, and try to bring them all home. Semper Fi.

first and foremost, he has respect of those he leads. he is responsible for the training, guiding, discipline, and over all preparedness of those he leads.although they may not like him or what he has to do sometimes, they understand why he does what he does and follows his orders without question. he gives his time and energy to ensure those in his care are taken care of, emotionally, physically, spiritually, and so on. he is hard, but fair and cares for those under his tenure. he is someone who would risk his life for any one under his command and they would do the same for him. it is truly an honor for him to be put in the position of caring and teaching those he leads so that if something goes wrong any of them could step in his place and the group not miss a beat. he does what is right. he is intelligent enough to learn from his mistakes and others mistakes past and present and never sacrifice more than his group could afford.he is protecting us from other countries, he is teaching little kids how to play sports, he volunteers his time for those less fortunate. he is not always in the military. he is our neighbor and friend and we will miss him dearly when he is gone. by saying he does not only mean a man, there are women i would do all of these thing for and they would do the same for me. we all want to be him or her. and i hope that i am he.
