I am getting a rebuilt engine for my 1985 Toyota 4runner, I would like to know how to prime the oil in the engine before I start it up for the first time.

According to a Toyota service manual I have, it says to remove the spark plugs and disable the ignition system and crank the engine until oil pressure registers on the gauge or the oil light goes out. After that you should re-install the plugs and wires and enable the ignition and fire the engine. It may take a few moments to get fuel but it should start without much effort. I hope this helps out.

Good question. You can probably get away with simply removing the spark plugs and cranking the engine for a while after the oil pressure has risen. Use the oil pressure light to check this.

However, you should definitely check with the rebuilder for something more specific. He'll have put assembly lube on all bearings and cams and such to protect the engine on initial startup.

I manually spun the oil pump of a rebuilt Ford big block with a cordless drill chucked up on the oil pump before I installed the distributor. As you spin the drill, you will pump the oil thruout your engine from your oil pan. Also, you could pour oil directly into the valve covers to let it run down thru the engine.
