I've always been curious on how to give yourself a 'smoky eye' using eye makeup. Does anybody know how?

My eyes are a darkish brown with flecks of green (mainly brown). I'm not sure if eye colour helps at all but just in case. :)

The Smokey Eye makeup technique, if done "properly" will not make you look like a raccoon! But, it will take some practice to get it right.
You will need:
~a trio eyeshadow (probably best to try with browns/neutrals first and then experiment after you are comfortable with it)
~black eyeliner (pencil, not liquid)
~black mascara
~2 good eyeshadow brushes (by "good" I mean not the crap ones that come in your eyeshadow compact!); natural bristle eyeshadow brush and a smudger (basically a sponge type with a nice tip on it)
~Optional items: lash curler, clear mascara

Start by taking the lightest color in your shadow trio and blending it over entire lid from base to brow. Next, take the middle shade and blend that from the base to the crease. Take your black eyeliner and line the entire eye as close to the lashline as possible. You can do just the top lashline or line both top and bottom. Experiment and see which way you like it best. After lining, "gently" smudge the liner (you don't want to take it off, you want to make it less 'perfect') Now, take your darkest shadow shade and blend it on the outer corner of the lid and into the crease and lashline (it will sort of look like and < on the left eye and a > on the right eye). You can lightly shade over the liner under bottom lashes if you lined both top and bottom. If you do this, make sure the very corners of the eyes are not left pale without liner/color. Blend everything, it's very important that there are no sharp lines anywhere!
Curl top lashes and apply 2-3 coats of mascara.

Side note: any good eye makeup always looks best on well groomed eyes. Make sure your brows are in good shape and loose hairs plucked. To keep brows in place, use a clear mascara and 'brush' them into place. The gel-mascara will hold the brows beautifully all day/night.

Good luck and don't get discouraged if it doesn't turn out perfect the first time...once you get the hang of it, it will be beautiful!

I learned from a kit that I bought from Bare Essentials (makeup)- all you do is first get a light pinkish shadow with shimmer in it and apply it to your top lid up to almost your eye brow. Then get a grey colored shadow and apply that in the crease of you eye lid to the outer corner of eye-then under your bottom lashes (a little) near the outer corner. It's kinda hard to explain but that was my best explaination. If that didn't work go to your local spa and ask them if they sell Bare Minerals or Bare Essentials makeup- if they sell it then they should have that kit that comes with directions.
